The Bella Macchina Porsche

Between being busy and lazy, I am backed up by over 40 cars for the click and brag (so backed up that I will never catch up).

This one is a cool car though, because it is the Bella Macchina Porsche. It will be entered in a lot of shows this summer so it has to be perfect. It is a 1983 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo. The engine was rebuilt recently (and supped up considerably) as it now produces just shy of 415 horsepower at the rear wheels (as opposed to 260ish stock).

The rear tires are 345's, and in first gear, the Porsche will spin them like crazy. It does have some serious turbo lag, but once turbo spools, this thing shoots down the road like crazy. (The 1983 Porche Turbo's are gray market cars from Europe, meaning they are seriously light).

In prepping the car for the show circut, I would say a total of 30 hours (or more) was put into the body prep.

The paint was heavily scratched and had light oxidation. After washing with Meguiars Hyperwash and claying with Sonus Gray, the car was pulled into the garage. It took a little shy of 2 hours to tape up the body and trim.

We then spent another hour measuring the paint thickness, and found it to average about 3.7 mils, with the hood ranging from 3.5 to 8!

Under the halogen's, the driver side door had some serious water etching and pock marking.

Here is a 50/50 of the driver's side door to show how much damage was on the paint and the improvement that was made.

Here is a close up of the same area....

Door before...

The damage required heavy compounding to remove all the RIDS and water damage/staining.

3M Extra Cut PI-3000 was applied for 2 to 3 passes using a Lake Country Purple Wool Pad on my Makita.

It left the finish "worse" looking

After ensuring the all defects where removed, Menzerna SIP was used on an Orange Lake Country Pad (7.5 inch CCS) to clean up the wool marring...

Then the paint was cleaned up further with 106ff on a Meguiars' So1o finishing pad.

The rear fender recieved the same treatement...

Again with the rear of the rear fender, the paint was cut to remove defects, then polished, then refined. The goal was to remove 25 years worth of damage and bring this car all the way back.

The door handle cups had 25 years worth of scratches which required Menzerna SIP on a green German foam block for about 8 passes (a 4 minutes a pass ). Then the finish was refined with Meguiars Scratch X using a Meguiar's Applicator.

After

The mirrors got the full treatment. Unfortunately, because this is a 25 year old car with 70,000 miles, there is some road abrasion and rock damage to the paint (that will be touched up and wetsanded out later on).

Halfway done (I forgot to take afters of the mirror)

5 passes later...

Unfortunately business took me out of town for a week (2 GT2's, 1 Carrera GT, 1 360 Spider, 1 GT3, 1 930 Slant Nose, and a F355 Spider).

I was lucky enough to have Pat McCall (forum super moderator Pats300ZX) stop by for some more polishing.

Bella Macchina's newest memeber (and owner of the car) Jon Springer working the PorterCable in some hard to reach area's (under the whale tail)

After all the polishing was complete (about 30 hours) the car was pulled out in the sun for inspection.

Re: The Bella Macchina Porsche

Then we pulled the car back in and applied ClearKote Red Moose Machine Glaze by porter cable via a Lake Country Gray CCS pad (6 inch).

This was followed by 2 coats of P21s 100% Carnauba Wax, each given 24 hours to set.

Which brings me to my newest "must have" product, 1Z's Plastik Reiniger. A little passion on a blue microfiber applicator seemed to "melt" away years of oxidization and restored the plastic and rubber trim to an original finish.

I spent about 3 hours getting all the trim, weather stripping, etc....

After the trim was dressed with 303 Areospace. The wheels recieved Zaino AIO topped with Zaino Z2pro. The glass was cleaned with Meguiar's Pro Line Glass Cleaner and polished with Zaino Glass Polish on a PorterCable. Tire tires where scrubbed with Eimann Fabrik Tire cleaner and dressed with Zaino Z16.

We still have to do the interior, engine, and various projects to get it ready for the Celebration car show, but here are some afters for now...

Flash Perfection

3 weeks and 30 hours later, the Porsche 930 was returned to it's garage, much happier then when it left 3 weeks previous

Re: The Bella Macchina Porsche

You gotta love the old style Porsches! I have always loved the curves on the back end of the 911 series. Great reflections on the back rear quarter!

Glad to hear you found 1z Plastik Reiniger. I'm a fan of 1z products also. I like their Tiefenfleger (Vinyl/Rubber Care) as well.

Terrific before and afters as usual.

Re: The Bella Macchina Porsche

The car came out incredible Todd. I can attest that his car is so "bad ***". The exhaust tone just gives you chills up and down your spine.

It was an honor and a pleasure to work on it with you Todd. I can't tell you how much I learned in the time that we worked together. You are a true master...

BTW..the rental place commented on how great the rental car's hood looked lol. Gotta love 105

Re: The Bella Macchina Porsche

A real labor of love. It turned out really well, especially considering the starting condition. Good luck with the show efforts this year. This one should do well.

Looks awesome! Just like the whale tail one I did a few months ago.
