Gouged door repair: Legacy

This customer backed his car into a decorative stone and gouged the plastic cladding of his Legacy wagon. We came to his home and repaired this door damage and detailed his car, in and out.

Process:
1. Wax/grease remove.
2. Tape and mask off area.
3. Scuff entire work area with liquid abrasive.
4. Scuff scratches with 100 grit.
5. Fill with Rage filler.
6. Sand with 220.
7. Apply sealer.
8. Mix 2.5 oz. of Subaru gold.
9. Spray Subaru gold w/ Sata HVLP Minijet IV.
10. Allow 5 minutes to cure.
11. Spray 3 oz. of PPG Deltron clearcoat (85 degree hardener, reduced 10%) over entire panel.
12. Demask. Paint is dry within 15 minutes on an 80 degree day.

Time:
The door panel took 70 minutes. Detail took 3 hours with two techs working.

Charge:
$225 (usually $300 onsite) during the detail. $275 for the detail.

The stealership wanted to replace the door cladding and charge $595 for this repair.

Very nice but Rage wasn't designed for plastics. Try Evercoat Polyflex (part# 100411) after heating
the area. Or 3M Automix EZ Sand (part# 5895) after a coat or two of adhesion promoter (part# 5907).
Then sand P400/P800 and it's ready for sealer and bc/cc.

Which sealer are you using?

Rage has worked well as an all purpose filler. It should work fine on body cladding, as I don't expect much flex on this part. We do use Evercoat on bumpers.


Our sealer is PPG's Deltron DAS3025--fast curing and it creates a great bed for metallic basecoats.

I'm sure you've run into this problem, so I will ask it here.

What would you recommend for painting the lower panels on a Chevy Blazer. Almost 3/4 of them on the road have the rock rash where the paint has flaked away. What sort of sealant for the panel is best?

Teach me how.... seriously LOL.. I've been asked to do this over and over again. I always have to send them to the body shops because it's something I haven't been trained in.

Just repaint with any quality combination of primer, basecoat, and clearcoat.

If you don't want the chipping to return, apply a clearbra after 30 days.

From my experience, the galvanized coating they have on them from the factory cannot be replicated.
