How many layers of PGP should I do?

How many layers of Paint Guard Plus can you layer before reaching a point of diminishing returns? I applied layer 3 on my truck and it really seems to be noticeable now...very slick too! How many more layers should I do?

Re: How many layers of PGP should I do?

I have 3 on my 4Runner. It is super slick, but I think I added the last layer too thick, since I have streaking that I had to remove with ONR mixed with water in a spay bottle. The streaking was tough to remove with the detail spray.

I may do a ONR wash next week to see how it looks, then decide if I want to layer more.

I would do at least two coats initially. After that if I have a spray product that I apply after every wash.

Re: How many layers of PGP should I do?

I 'm currently using 4 layers on the tops and 3 on the sides of my black vehicle. So far I am not impressed with the looks of UPGP. It is wet looking and very slick so far, but I think that the car looked better before I put the UPGP on. I just do not think that UPGP is all that clear.

I polished with 106FF and white pad 2x and then polished with PO85RD and blue sonus SFX-3 pad 2x. The paint did not need any serious correction, I was just trying to achieve as much gloss and reflection as possible.

The paint had much, much clearer and sharper reflections after the polishing but before the 1st layer of UPGP. Subsequent layers only muted the reflections even more. I am putting myself in the group that thinks that UPGP leaves a slight milky haze. My car was as deep a black as you could get after I finished polishing. The blackness took on a very slight grayness with the UPGP. More layers only made it more noticeable. It was like taking a brand new black t-shirt and then washing it a half dozen times so it started to lose it's blackness.

Yes, I did not use the UPPP, but DavidB says that it is not necessary.
I did a 50/50 IPA wipe down 2x before putting the 1st layer of UPGP on.
I allowed that layer to dry 14 hours before wiping down the car with the detail spray.
The 2nd layer I let dry for 24 hours then wiped down the car with detail spray.
The 3rd layer I let dry for about 30 hours before using the detail spray.
The 4th layer was allowed to dry for about 16 hours.

I am experienced with WOWA products, Z-CS & Optiseal, so working in the sealant and putting a thin layer down was not an issue. The only streaking I ever had was a few spots where I changed the direction I was wiping and the applicator left some wipe marks. They all wiped off easily with the detail spray.

I wanted to test DavidB's claim that UPGP knocks the socks off of Souveran so about 1 month ago did 1/2 my car with Prima Amigo glaze, then FK1 FX-100 spray glaze and then finished off with 2 layers of Souveran. I have been using Zaino or JW for a long time and needed to refesh my memory about how good Souveran looks. While I did not do a side-by-side with the UPGP and Souveran, the Souveran blows UPGP away in every looks category. Sharper and clearer reflections with tons of depth in the black paint.

I appreciate the clarity of Z-CS more now.

Re: How many layers of PGP should I do?

I'll add my $.02 on the looks of UPGP.

The way is reflects light is different than I have seen with other products. It creats an almost shimmering effect, like light reflecting off of a lake that has slight movement. Wheather that is good or bad is subjective.

My jade green 4Runner looked very wet and reflective after the fisrt two layers cured. The third I put on too much and got considerable streaking in areas like door handles and mouldings. I have not washed but I did try the detail spray, which is not bad, but the sprayer in the sample kit provides too fine of a mist, it seems like 25% just gets blown away. I also did a ONR water mix in a spray bottle wipe down on some panels to remove streaking since it was very stubborn in some spots.

The initial gloss after it cured was great, I just want to see how long it lasts. There is no mistaking this for a sealant.

It's cloudy here today, but I will try to post pics shortly.

Steve

Re: How many layers of PGP should I do?

I noticed the 3rd layer added quite a bit of wetness to my steel grey Saab, but have since added a 4th and yesterday a 5th layer. I think 3 was probably the point where the diminishing returns kicked in, as I cant honestly see much or any difference. But it is soooo easy to use and only takes a few minutes that I tend to do another layer rather than QD

I like the finish and havent seen any issues as others have mentioned, using it on steel grey (like a dark silver) or very dark pearl grey. Will be trying it on a dark red pearl soon I hope.....
