The clip that holds the backing plate assembly is AWOL so the backing plate won't stay on the UDM unless I am holding it against the car. Is this something I can get the part for and replace myself or should I send it in for repair (and maybe updated brushes-occasionally I smell a burning smell but it still works fine).

The burning smell is the first sign it's going i think. You know DB and Lynn will hook you up because their customer service is number one in my book with a replacement fast......P.S. it also depends when you got yours.

Send it back and we'll replace it with a fresh refurb.
