Re: Having my first surgery in 6-8 weeks

I talked to my regular doctor (before I detailed his car) about the pain medication and he said to take whatever the surgeon recommends. He then said "you are really stressing over this aren't you?" and I told him "Yeah, a bit. I'm getting cut open, there is pain involved, a week off work, limits on what I can do physically for a while so I have a lot on my mind". He replied "Seriously, this operation is a chip shot, you'll be fine".

I hope he's right.

I was stressing over this same operation but as your doc said, it was a chip shot. I've had worse sessions at the dentist. LOL

Re: Having my first surgery in 6-8 weeks

I'll know in a week if everyone is right.

Got a call from the surgeon's office today. My insurance is coving the operation but I had to come up with $566 to cover my deductible. At least it is taken care of. All I have to do now is show up at 6 am next Tuesday.

Oh well, I get a week off and my brother is building me a new computer. Just putting my current computer in my trunk and I guess my brother will drive me back to his house in my car (that way, whenever I am ready to go back home, no one has to drive me). Then he will rip my hard drive onto the new computer so while I am recuperating at his house for a few days, I will have my own computer to use. I may even had time to catch up on the rest of the pictures I have yet to even resize and get them posted!

Re: Having my first surgery in 6-8 weeks

Scott: First off, best of luck to you with recovery.

How did you come about this surgeon? What type of mesh is he using (brand and model)? How many hernia surgeries does this surgeon perform annually? Have you had a second opinion about laporoscopic placement of the mesh?

This is a pretty "common" surgery to have and the recovery times aren't too bad. Regarding "feeling the mesh", a lot of that comes down to good surgical technique and choice/placement of mesh...which is why I asked the questions above.

The surgeon was recommended to me by my regular doctor (and nearly 14 year customer) and after meeting with him (the surgeon), I feel very comfortible with him doing the operation. Laporoscopic placement isn't really an option with a hernia the size of mine, too much excess skin and my belly button is pretty blown out. He will have to remove the excess skin and remake me a belly button as best as he can. He said it is about twice the size of as big as he would recommend using laporoscopic placement. I've had the hernia about 10 years now, just in the past two years has it really gotten big. He also told me not all people feel the mesh but if I do, there is stretching I can do to aleviate it. Going to be pretty big mesh, he says the hole in my abdominal wall is about the size of a silver dollar.

Not sure exactly how many hernias he repairs a year but he says he does quite a few. My doctor says I am in very good hands and will be back making sure his Lexus stays clean pretty quickly.

Re: Having my first surgery in 6-8 weeks

I had my surgery a week ago monday. Im in a lot of pain , but they say it will get better . Im am now in a nursing home. This one seems like one of the better ones. One of the good things is that I found a comptuer that I can use. At least I can keep up with detailing web sites.

Re: Having my first surgery in 6-8 weeks

Here y'all go, a before picture. Even holding a penny to show it is my actual umbilical hernia. There will be an after shot in a few weeks.

If you don't want to see it, don't scroll past the dots...
