Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

Aquafina use city water at their plant in Durham, North Carolina. This fact came out when Durham city faced drought issues and it was discussed they were a big user of city water and shipping it outside the city ! They were not asked to conserve like residents.

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

All bottled water is not the same. I've been a big water drinker my whole life and have tried RO, Distilled, Purified and a
Berkey Water Filter that's supposed to be one of the best. I couldn't stomach the aftertaste of the filtered tap water. My favorite brand is Poland Springs, Deer Park 2nd, both produced by Nestle Waters and can taste the difference. I pay $1 per 3L bottle (3Qt 5.4 Oz) on sale and stock up. Nestle's also had something to say about the recent allegations, but of course this never makes the headlines.
To each his own.....water!

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

Some people can appreciate the difference in waters just like some can tell different LSPs apart (even if most people can't). Heh heh, everyone I know in my area thinks the tap water is fine, but I think it needs a *lot* of treatment before it's drinkable.

When traveling, there are a lot of places where I'd rather go with a bottled water (one I've had before, a known quality) than regular tap water. There are a lot of water spigots in the world that I'm not gonna drink out of

Same opinion here, but I've had so many Poland Spring bottles taste off when the bottles have been warmed up (e.g., left in the vehicle for a while) that I've been buying Deer Park almost exclusively. I really do prefer the Poland Spring, but only when it doesn't get that funny plastic-bottle taste.

Some hoses have a warning on them when you buy them that says not for potable water! I drink the water that goes through my fridge filter with a couple of slices of lime and ice cubes. Bottled water is a scam and the chemicals that get in the water from the container are not good for you.

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

"PWS" story from '07:

NEW YORK — The label on Aquafina water bottles will soon be changed to spell out that the drink comes from the same source as tap water, the brand's owner PepsiCo said Friday.

A group called Corporate Accountability International has been pressuring bottled water sellers to curb what it calls misleading marketing practices.

Aquafina is the single biggest bottled water brand, and its bottles are now labeled "P.W.S." The new labels will spell out "public water source." LOL

"If this helps clarify the fact that the water originates from public sources, then it's a reasonable thing to do," PepsiCo spokeswoman Michelle Naughton said Friday.

The corporate accountability group is also pressing for similar concessions from The Coca-Cola Co., which owns the Dasani water brand, and Nestle Waters North America, seller of Nestle Pure Life purified drinking water, which gets some of its water from municipal sources.

Dasani's Web site says that Dasani comes from local water supplies and is then filtered.

"We don't believe that consumers are confused about the source of Dasani water," Coca-Cola spokeswoman Diana Garza Ciarlante said. "The label clearly states that it is purified water."

Sales of bottled water has been a growing source of revenue for companies such as PepsiCo Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., and Atlanta-based Coca-Cola as they lessen their dependence on sales of traditional carbonated sodas, as consumer concern over health issues has weakened demand.

Nestle said Friday it has been printing new labels for its Pure Life water that say whether the water comes from municipal supplies or ground water, and the labels will begin showing up later this year. Pure Life is the only Nestle bottled water that uses public water sources and the company did not have an estimate for how much of its supply originates from the tap.

Wholesale sales of bottled water grew to $11 billion in 2006, according to the Beverage Marketing Corp., and the industry is expected to maintain growth rates of about 10 percent. The fastest growing segment of the industry is sales of bottles of less than 1.5 liters, which includes the individual serving sizes sold in many convenience and grocery stores.

The decisions by Nestle and PepsiCo come as criticism grows over environmental concerns about the industry's use of local water sources as well as consumption of resin and energy to package and ship the bottles.

Last month alone, a barrage of news hit the industry: San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom banned city-funded purchases of bottled water; New York City launched an ad campaign called "Get Your Fill" to promote the benefits of tap water; and the U.S. Conference of Mayors adopted a resolution to bring attention to the importance of public water systems and the negative impact of bottled water.

"I think it's unfortunate we have gotten into this tap water vs. bottled water debate," the chief executive of the International Bottled Water Association, Joe Doss, said. "I do not think consumers are uniformly replacing tap water with bottled water."

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

Yeah i've heard about that too. And even that some waters in the bathroom of some fast food chains are better than the water from the soda machines (as the filters aren't cleaned out).

Do you remember which professor wrote this article or where the source came from? I'd like to check it out.

What I really find interesting is that you can buy a 2 liter bottle of flavored water (aka store brand soft drinks) for just 79 cents but if you want it clear without the phosphoric acid, caffeine, coloring, etc. it costs more.

My wife was a huge bottled water freak before I installed a Pur Water Filter on the kitchen faucet. I had to convince her that she'd actually be saving money with the filter versus buying bottled. At 99 cents a bottle and buying 5 bottles at a time, I saw that we could save more buying the filter and not having to change it for 3 months.

Long story short, she likes the tap water now more than the bottled stuff.

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

We like the convenience of water in bottles so we have empties and keep refilling them. For trips (long or short), we always carry at least one bottle with us. On longer trips, we use a cooler.

They offer convenience but you can avoid the price by just planning ahead.

I do not think people realize the long term cost. One bottle a day for a month is likely $25 to 30.

I would be careful with using those water bottles for a long time. Bacteria can get trapped in between the crevices in those water bottles over time. They're meant for single use.

I would just suggest spending 5-10 dollars and buy a nalegene bottle or even a stainless steel canister which prevent bacteria from growing on the bottle. I'm also guilty of using water bottles also, but i restrict myself to just 1 refill.

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

Even though I drink Poland Springs and Deer Park, I agree that some of the other brands are just glorified tap water. About plastics, that's an issue that's becoming more known about. Canada has banned BPA (Bisphenol A) from Baby Bottles and hopefully more companies and countries will follow suit. Our FDA is corrupt and in bed with Big Pharma and Chemical companies so who knows if they'll ever do anything about it.

A good alternative to plastic bottles is glass bottles with a padded insulator to protect from breaking. Snapple Tea bottles work well, for example. Dollar stores sometimes carry the insulators. Or splurge for $5 and get one at a retail store.

Re: Busting The Myth On Bottled Water

I've think berkey water filters are great for the money. Initially, I thought they were two expensive. Then I sat down and did the math on how much I spend on bottled water and realized that I would be saving money if I could discipline myself a little. Moreover, I'm in the camp that wants to cut down on all those plastic water bottles anyway, so I feel it's an investment that's totally worth looking into.
