Question Pain killers in Ontario

This question goes out to all my Canadians. Simple really, What is the process for obtaining prescription medications in Canada ? Example 1; In the US you have to visit a doctor, He will issue a written prescription, which you take to the pharmacy to have filled. Example 2; In Mexico you can walk into the pharmacy, and request your medications without a written prescription, or a visit to the doctor. What is Canadian law on this issue ? Im told its similar to Mexico ? Im going to Niagra on the Ontario side. When traveling I dont like to carry my medications over boarders as it could create a headache with Customs. The medication in question is Hydromorphone.

You can just edit your first post to adjust your colors, and then delete your second. You may get thru customs ok on the way back, just don't get pulled over by the NJSP on your way back to VA, they will search the whole car. They're bad in MD, too.

EDIT: Oh, unless you're flying?

In Canada if is a prescription drug, you must have either a written prescription from your doctor or your doctor must call in the prescription to the pharmacy. Don't know where you heard it is like the Mexican system, but that is a no go, unless it is an over-the-counter drug in Canada.

Aren't more drugs over the counter in Mexico than in the US? I believe I have hard of people in Southern California, Arizona and Southwest Texas going to Mexico to get medication cheaper due to exchange rates and not needing a prescription for that particular drug in the US. I believe Mexico's verions of the FDA is a little more lenient than the US's. Again, this could be rumor also.

The Canadian system is just like the U.S system. If it's a prescription drug you need one from your doctor to get it at a pharmacy. The only real difference is some drugs in Canada that are prescriptions in the US are OTC here (but nothing major, im talking like tylenol 500), and that prescription drugs here tend to be cheaper.

Get a note from your doctor describing why you need pain killers and bring 'em over.

I don't know if the issue is so much that the drugs are otc in Mexico, so much as it's that a pharmacist will sell you whatever you want for cash.

This was a while back when I visited Mex, but there was no problem getting meds. I walked up to the counter, and said I would like to purchase 30 percocet 5/500. I was warned of side effects, interactions, and limitations on crossing back into the US. Thats all ! Ive traveled to a lot of countries, and alot of them practice medication distribution the same way. ofcourse with the exeption of Austrailia, England, and Canada I now learned from a phone call.
Thanks for all the post.

Re: Pain killers in Ontario

what kind of pain killers are you looking for? certain ones like tylon, advil, and 222 (these have codeen in them so watch out) are available otc. Stronger pain killers like T3 can be had with a simple persction. Then things like Vic and oxy (my boss is on them) need very special persciptions that are actually a diffrent colour and regure federal permision to admisiter and sell....

but if you are looking for something like T3's get the script fro the doc and you should have no isse.

ohh just make sure to haveit in the orginal bottle witht the lable clear and vissable for customs. Dont try to pull nay crap at the border
