Botox for Excessive Sweating?

I've been suffering from pretty bad sweating for quite some time, I'd say since I was 14-15 and my past internship really showed it. Since I had to wear solid dress shirts daily my shirts would be soaked. I've tried pretty much every OTC deodorant including the 'clinical strength' ones with no luck. I'm thinking it's time to make an appointment with a dermatologist and see if I'm eligible for Botox as well as if my insurance will cover it.

I'm wondering if anyone on the boards has any experience, or knows someone who has used Botox for excessive sweating? I'm wondering how effective it is, as well as risks. I did some quick searches but the stuff I was finding seemed a little dated, like when Botox was just approved a couple years back. It also seemed to be testimonials of a 'friend of friend' thing. Theres nothing I hate more then my excessive sweating and not wearing nice clothes because of it.

Re: Botox for Excessive Sweating?

First, I don't know anything about this except for my personal experience - which I *think* is contrary to how it is supposed to work, LOL.

About four years ago I was on a lot of pain meds for nearly constant migraines. I got off of all of those which was a major chemical change for my body.

I had never been much of a "sweater" before but boy did that change. Just doing the simplest tasks I would sweat like a pig. The doc checked a bunch of stuff (for other reasons) and my thyroid was just barely low, some would call it normal. He prescribed the smallest, tiniest dose of thyroid medicine and I dried right up.

I think that sweating tends to go along with a higher thyroid level but I responded just the opposite. Color me odd.

Go to a good doctor, I imagine that there are probably many different causes. Your sweating may even be a symptom of something else?

Re: Botox for Excessive Sweating?

Ended up just going to my primary, and asked them there. Didn't get to see a Dr, but the NP took me in and wrote me a script for Drysol. I was pretty skeptical, but last night I used it, and I was extremely pleased at how 'dry' my underarms for a majority of the day. I hope it continues to work since it's a lot cheaper than botox.

an appropriate simile `sweat like a horse' might be more accurate since pigs do not sweat.

Re: Botox for Excessive Sweating?

A couple of my physicians have had their armpits Botox'd. It's a temporary fix (about 6 months), but is very effective; especially for those hot months.

Like detailing, going for the least invasive methods possible are usually the treatment paradigm.

Re: Botox for Excessive Sweating?

I mentioned this option to someone on another forum. One member there said he had the procedure done 4 years ago and is just now starting to sweet again. He said it knocked out almost 100% of the sweeting AND his insurance covered it due to him being diagnosed with hyperhidrosis.

Drysol works wonders.
