Ottawa IL newbie looking for pro tutor

Howdy Midwesterners, Just got to this site and find it quite impressive. Painted industrially for about 11 years and realized that I have "The Eye and Hand" for detail work. Thinking about becoming proficient enough to take on some side jobs for a little extra pocket change. Want to learn the ropes; so if there is anyone close by or if you can point me in the right direction on how to become a great detailer, I'd appreciate any input. Thanks in advance, Howard

thanks gav, I know that area fairly well. Do you have your own shop or is it a hobby? I'd like to check out your work and get some tips from you sometime. Thanks for the reply. Peace, Howard

Oh BTW, I'd really like to start with car polishing. I've used a buffer a couple times but I know I didn't use it right. First Q, Do you guys use pneumatic or electric buffers? What's the difference? TY

the majority here uses either a dual action prter cable 7424 or some type of rotary.

unskilled at a rotary will only spell harm for the paint.
i would invest in a porter cable for now, just to get your feet wet,

i do it as a hobby, the last 2 years really well.
if you do a search in the click and brag section, you can find some of my work,
browse all others too !! lots of talented guys on here.

My GF's family is from Maresilles (pardon my spelling)

I've got a friend who lives in Princeton, IL who's a detailer at the dealership there.

I could meet up with you next time I'm out there or I can get your info to my buddy, if he's willing to help (he's a super cool guy, i'm sure he will)

I'm going to be storing my MR2 in princeton at his "shop" this winter and working on it while it's there, so we can always help you then.

David
