A few things I come across that I can share. I see alot of younger 18-22 guys trying to go from Abercrombie & Hollister one day, to business professional the next, and most of them seem to think a button up shirt and some shiny shoes does the trick when in reality it does not.
French Cuffs, I see too many people wearing these with jeans or khaki pants and nothing else. French Cuff shirts should be worn with pressed dress pants and a tie minimal.
Belt, the most often overlooked part of someones wardrobe. You don't want to throw on a nice dress shirt, dress pants, and shiny shoes only to ruin the look with some crummy belt. Also another thing I notice is that alot of people will get belts that are too thin for the loops in their pants. Most men's pants have either 1.25 or 1.5" loops so you should find a belt that fills them.
Black jeans, honestly I didn't even know they made thoes anymore. Black jeans with a button up...go watch an episode of Seinfeld and tell me how that looks, might as well throw on the white sneakers to go with it.
Pressed or not, its either all or nothing. If you are going to have a nice pressed in crease in your pants, your shirt needs to be pressed as well. I know once you put it on and wear it a bit it will wrinkle some but the lines in the sleve and the straightness on the collar do not go away. I see so many people with a pressed shirt and non pressed pants or vise versa.
Socks, get socks that match the color of your pants. Nothing is funnier than looking across a meeting room and seeing a person with dark pants and black shoes wearing white socks.
Fit, clothes need to fit properly. When you put on pants and the cuff hangs down to the floor on the back and bunches up above your laces in front, its time for a hem. You also see the skinnier kids wearing pants 1 size too big and a shirt that is too large. The shirt looks like someone stuck a leaf blower up it and the pants seem like they will fall down at any moment.
Watch, you can tell alot about a person by their watch. Seiko, Bulova, Citizen are all nice watches from a time keeping and build quality perspective and look the part of a professional without costing you an arm and a leg.
There is alot more that goes into all of this, but this is just a few things I noticed and thought they were worth mentioning. The premis of this thread started out on shirts, but what you wear every day is a package, not just the shirt.

wow best post anyone has made so far. i couldn't agree more. i'm currently 23 and since coming back from overseas, i've been building my clothing collection so that i have something to wear for every occasion. i've found that bostonian's shoes are nice and comfy, as well as affordable.
+1 for brooks brothers
my biggest suprise though: noone has mentioned
Johnston & Murphy. they make really classy looking clothes IMHO that fit great and are very high quality. i have two pairs of shoes and a belt from them, and although they're a little more pricey, the quality is outstanding, and i get so many nice looks and compliments when i have their stuff on. i'm honestly growing tired of what used to be cool back when i was younger, and have found many more people check me out when i have on some real classy *** looking clothing than when wearing something "trendy and youthful". even owning some expensive gym shoes - noone looks at you, no women smile at you, and you don't feel confident like i do in nice shirt, pants/shorts, matching colored shoes+belt+watch. i have a citizen watch with black leather band (was a real nice xmas gift to me), and a kennith cole brown leather band watch. i never thought i'd wear a leather strapped watch, but wow i love them both and i think it really ads a touch of class, and pulls the entire get-up together because of the colors and such.
if you're young, careful about spending money as sizes will almost certainly change, but theres surely nothing like looking good and therefor feeling good.
