I'll buy four pairs of seemingly identical cotton pants (unfinished/unhemmed), launder them a few times before having the inseams done, and find that they don't all shrink exactly the same.
And yeah, Lands End has some nice stuff, especially for the money; I used to buy their dress/casual shirts and I can't remember *ever* wearing one out...

I allow a quarter to a half inch shrinkage on 100% cotton slacks and jeans. FWIW, they also sell their jeans unhemmed if you want to have that done after a few washings.
I order 33x28.75 and they turn out perfect for my short legs. LOL
I like their dress shirts and chinos too. The quality of materials, construction and fit is so much better than most of the rack clothing that I just never shop for anything anywhere else anymore. If you sign up for their email they will offer free shipping and end of season sales periodically too. They are my favorite clothing e-tailer.

Re: Pants/Jeans favorite brands
jfelbab- Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I just have so much trouble guesstimating how the shrinkage will go that I always buy unfinished. Sounds like you have it pretty well figured out for you.
My primary purchases from Lands End these days are their socks But I do have a few pairs of their chinos/khakis that I like. Same story, I buy 'em with a 33" waist and then have the waist taken in, that gives me enough room everywhere else (at least if I buy the right, slightly relaxed style). Different from my Bill's and variety is good
Now if they'd just make their sweatpants a little roomier...seems like *everybody* is making them tighter these days; I have some *old* pairs that still fit me great but whenever I buy replacements I send 'em back over insufficient seat/thigh room. The only ones that're fitting me these days are from The Territory Ahead and Deluth Trading Company (and the latter aren't any too roomy).
I can't wear *any* knit/casual/sweat/T shirts from Lands End Just no room even when I buy a huge size. Can't wear their dress shirts anymore, but my current shirtmaker is one of the few people on this planet who *always* satisfies me 100%.

What's old is new again. Fashion is fickle and funny. Seems old school and retro are the order of the day with the teens and 20-somethings.

Maybe they'll bring back grammar and common courtesy while they're at it...well, one can dream.
Edit: Gee, aren't *I* the cranky (not-all-that-)old guy

One can only hope.
My teen boys are getting cocky. I'm always on them about their manners, grammar, and generally learning to do the "right thing". They frequently have some smart-a$$ reply, to which I quip "Old age and treachery will win over youth and enthusiasm every time!"
Let the treachery begin!

Re: Pants/Jeans favorite brands
I can't say I get to wear jeans too often - I don't at work, and can't during the day - I live in Miami. So winter is my favorite time of year because I can live in jeans (when not at work). I own a lot of them.
Favorite Pair or Jeans = AG (Adriano Goldschmied - aka Godfather of Denim - the founder of Diesel (which is hit or miss for me).
Why AG? Being in Sunny So Fla. - when i wear jeans, I like a super lightweight pair of jeans. I'm not into heavy jeans that feel like I've been out playing in the rain. I love a pair that I could fall asleep in if need be. AG jeans are it for me. They are the best . . by far!.
Other jeans that I love - True Religion, William Rast, Antik Denim, , Seven, Laguna Beach (in that order)--> restricted to their lines that are more lightweight. Somebody mentioned BKEs because they are good for throwin around and not caring about. . . I agree - although they tend to be heavier.
Used to like Luckys, but their material isn't as good as it used to be - just not as soft anymore.
Rockn Republic - great LOOKING jean - but it is a little heavy on the denim.

my nephew is 12 years old and he is getting the talk back attitude. since my sister passed away earlier this year (my father, mom and myself are raising him now and we know it's going to be a long hard road as raising kids is not easy), i'm hoping he doesn't think that he can just slide by on things. i've been on him about his school/homework (that's one thing my sister was strict about) everyday and will be relentless about it whether he likes it or not. unfortunately when he acts up, timeout doesn't work anymore, he's too old for it LOL. in any case, i'm sure your boys are good kids, it's just every now and then they get that little attitude like their sh!t don't stink, and you have to set them straight and let them know who's boss...

I recently let my boys know that I'M NOT THEIR FRIEND; when they are older and can make wise decisions on their own, then we can be friends. IMHO, many parents (single parents in particular) make this mistake. I ride my boys pretty hard and I'm on them about everything (school, manners, language, friends, clothes, chores...). The decisions they make now will affect the rest of their life... including the blue jeans they wear.
My boys are not unlike any other average US teen male. They want to follow all the trends, including dying their hair, getting interesting hair cuts and wearing baggy jeans with their boxer shorts showing. That's where I draw the line, because it reflects directly on their family. Plus, they have no clue that the whole baggy pants fad started in jail to identify the b!tches.

Re: Pants/Jeans favorite brands
Well as a 22 year old who is not careful with his jeans and is always active in them. I have stuck with Express, Lucky, Guess or should I say G buy Guess, Unionbay, and suprisingly I LOVE LOVE LOVE my cheapest pair of pants...Levis(527). I will run around my house looking for those things while looking right past the $60 - $120 pair of jeans. I wear my jeans to fit my body 32x33 with a low rise waist/slim/boot cut jean is my favorite and thats all I wear.

Heh heh, I still have my late father's paperweight with that on it
I have all sorts of sympathy for people raising kids these days...I know every generation thinks child-rearing is a whole new challenge, but I really do think it's different; things really did change towards the end of the boom (whatever-Revolution indeed).
Interesting that kids don't know the origins of stuff...I remember being mortified when Chris-Cross (?) wore their jeans backwards; I thought "don't get yourselves incarcerated guys, you're projecting a certain image there".
