I wouldn't bother with 56k. Web pages have gotten bigger as bandwith has increased.

Re: Who actually still has a 56k modem?

When I got on the WWW (World Wide Wait) in '96 I had a second phone line installed and dedicated to the computer (so as not to miss phone calls - $42 w/ phone line and ISP) Eventually "shotgunned" the connections to increase to 128 kbs - Woohoo. In '00 I was in the first 50 in my area to have DSL installed (1.3 Mbs $40/month) and now have a "legacy" acct. w/ the same DSL provider (6.0 Mbs $35/month.)

Broadband has gotten cheaper through time but I'm afraid w/ the advent of torrents, Youtube and especially online gaming (and soon to be "HD" VOD) the price of bandwith will go up; or worse, come to a standstill.

Re: Who actually still has a 56k modem?

After almost 10 years of being on dial-up, I finally got on cable internet last year! I started out with a 4 mb/sec connection, but it doubled to 8 megs for free!

It beats dial-up big time, but I'm on Suddenlink. They're the worst rated on DSL · Cable · VOIP · Security · Satellite · Fiber · News · Tips · Reviews · Community · Tools - dslreports.com. I seldom get the speed I paid for unless it's really late or really early!
At night it slows down when everyone is online. My parents just got the same service in the rural area they live in. Their dial-up was incredibly slow. I'm so happy for them even though Suddenlink isn't so great.

The only thing bad is that you get used to the high speeds! When you first go from dial-up to high-speed, it's great.

Re: Who actually still has a 56k modem?

What I meant to say in my last comment is that cable internet is awesome at first, but you get used to the fast speeds. If it slows down for some reason, you get mad.

Verizon FiOS service here with 30 Mbps downloads and 5 Mbps uploads.

Nothing compares. It's like changing channels on your TV.

What do you mean? I'm Eastern European, and I don't remember when I last time used 56k modem... I'm on DSL for last 6-7 years if you care. I don't know any friends or relatives who use that old noisy 56k , I think its era is long gone

Agreed. Europe is actually beating NA to the NGN punch...their ADSL is still faster than many CLEC's cable speeds.

S-w-e-e-t, how much? It's not available around here and I don't do much streaming but would be nice when hitting some fast torrents.
