Spring is here, and I'm getting ready for serious engine cleaning -- on the white '75 Jag XJ6C which is in pretty good shape, and on the '93 Benz and white '75 Jag which have never had Autopian-quality attention. I've done a fair bit of reading here about engine cleaners, but am curious to see what has worked for other Autopians. I'm sure I have not listed all the "favorites" here, so please feel free to click "Other" and explain what's your favorite.

I've ordered EFHI, Meguiar's APC+, and (just because David's selling it) EF Citrus Engine Degreaser. Now I have two weekends to test and compare. Next stop: Indianapolis Jaguar Concours (April 26).

I think it's like your EF Citrus. And if you haven't used it before, you'll like the EFHI- good all-purpose cleaner. I WOULD, however, be a little careful about letting any of these cleaners sit for long on polished stuff like your valve cover. I've never had a problem, but still..
Once you get it nice, I imagine you'll primarily use solvents on the white coupe, stuff like 3M adhesive remover, Wurth Cleans-All, rubbing alcohol, etc. I usually just use those if regular car wash solution won't cut it.
Stock up on LOTS of different swabs and brushes!
Having just cleaned up the worst of the XJS's engine bay mess (just well enough that my mechanic won't get filthy while poking around in there), I envy you your 6-cylinder for a number of reasons. | |
