It is true, honest mechanics still exist!

For the last several months, I have been having an intermittent problem with my car. Every once in a while, when it starts, it runs real rough and either the CEL will come on, or it smooths out on its own. If the CEL light comes on, I can turn off the car and restart it and usually it is fine. Other times, I have gone over a railroad track or hit a pothole and my car will either die or start running rough. After a restart, it is fine. Sometimes it would buck and surge in the 45-55 mph range then clear up quickly.

Anyway, today, when my car started, it was rough for about 15 seconds then smoothed out but it was bogging after upshifts then it would start pulling again and the CEL came on. I pulled over and restarted my car and it was running better. I got done early today (damn rain that wasn't supposed to be falling, ) and went by my Honda mechanic. I do the normal maintenance and r/r stuff but he is the one who did my axles, transmission (the one that actually worked) and a/c.

He checked my ECU for the code, but the EX ECU I had swapped in didn't have the light and he couldn't find the jumper wire to plug in and read the code. He popped my hood and looked around underneath and notice the wiring for my MAP sensor looked odd. I had tried out a V-force for JET about 4 years ago (worked but serious drivability issues) that spliced into my MAP sensor and TPS. He moved the wire and my car stalled immediately. He got a new wire, crimped it into place and then moved it all around after I restarted the car. No problems at all!

Best of all, when I asked him how much, he said "no charge, you are a good customer". I handed him a $20 and told him I appreciated it and to use the money to buy himself and his assistant lunch tomorrow.

There are some around, you just have to find them.
I've got a brother and some friends that are mechs and as
long as I show up with parts in hand, they get installed free.
Doesn't hurt to have a cold six-pack floating around either

I've been taking my car to this guy for about 6-7 years now. He knows I am a detailer and that I can really only bring my car in on rainy days. He has always made the effort to get me out the same day...the exception being replacing my transmission. In addition, when I needed my fuel filter and oil pressure sending unit changed (it was leaking), he said if I picked up the parts on the way, I'd save some money and since he wouldn't have to wait for the parts to be delivered, he would have me in and out in less than an hour.

He also lets me pick his brain while I am there.

I have to agree with my mother on this one...

I'd rather have a mechanic in the family than a doctor.

It's the same in every line of work......good people are hard to find especially mechanics and detailers.
