Garage opener Safety eyes

You know those little boxes that make the door go back up if something crosses in front of they eyes. As I just put 2 new doors up and I am looking at those eyes I cant stand them! I hate the wires and I also don’t like if the door is open and you walk under the door it turns the light on the opener on. Has anyone bypassed the eyes so you don’t have to have them? I know that some people mount them on the wall and such, I don’t want to have them at all. I have had a garage with openers for 7 years with out them and never had a problem.

PS I have no children and live in a area with little or no people with children.

As you have said, some ppl put them on the wall, this might be your only option. Coil up the wires neatly and leave them on top of the opener box in the center of the garage. This way the electronics of the opener will not be tampered with, and with them out of the way, they will not activate.

well... essentially only one of the eyes is doing the "functional part" of the job.... the sensor inside the one eye detects a signal being sent out by the other eye's transmitter. So all you need to do is figure out which one is the sensor end, and use a multimeter to find out what the reading (in ohms) the sensor gives out when the circuit is closed, virsus when its open (i.e. when something blocks its path). Then you can get a resistor and solder it into the line in place of the box, and tuck the wire up inside the opener. Then, voila- your openers always think there's no blockage of the door path, and you don't have to worry about the boxes or other nuissance again!

What I did is instead of wiring everything i just mounted them to the top of the opener, so they would line up.

I too have no kids etc. But i kept all the brackets etc incase I need to wire them up to pass a home inspection when we move.

I suggest checking local building codes first........

It may be required to have them functioning......

At least when you sell the house.....

Just mounted them in the attic facing eachother, not much more to do, I did leave all the extra wire attached so that in the future I could put them up for code if need be

Redcarguy,

Your garage door opener is brand new from Sears! I have a Genie and it's a few years old but works and I keep it very clean. How did you direct the sensor "eye" wires to the attic? Did you drill one or two holes in your ceiling and then run the wires up thru threre?

Info is appreciated!
