Wool pad questions?

1. I have some 6 inch wool pads from AG that are "Concours-Series #77-216", prewashed white Lambswool Knitted, Velcro backed.

Question: Will these work OK on a Meguiar's 5 inch "rotary" backing plate? Would this pad be addressed as cutting or polish type wool pad?

2. I also have some EDGE Classic series wool pads "Single sided" which have a flexable backing with Velcro, this is a 6.5 inch backing with another 1/2 inch curved up lip of the same type backing material.

Question: Will these work correctly on the 5 inch Meguiar's backing plate or should a bigger BP be used?

Re: Wool pad questions?

I guess you could get by with a 5" backing plate, but a 6" would work a lot better as I don't think you're gonna like having all that extra flop or overhang.

Despite the manufactures' attempts to advertise otherwise, no wool pad should ever be associated with the word "polish." Wool is for heavy cutting only. With that said the lambswool pads are slightly less aggressive than the twisted wool variety.

Re: Wool pad questions?

Something you should know about wool pads is they cut much faster then foam . I would strongly suggest you test the wool pads and the product you intend to use them with on a test panel .

I find the wool color codes to be one step above the same color in foam . Another words a blue wool pad would be like a green foam pad . Of course the product you use will determine how the pads cut . Wool cuts much faster than foam, also its messier in that the wool fuzz gets all over .

Great score on the LC pre washed lambswool pads. I will have to pick up some of those myself.

Wool pads are great to learn on and with the right product they should glide with ease

Thanks rydawg, David Feramoni has been giving me advise on the Rotary (If it ever comes in) and pad stuff so I know I want to "learn the wool" way because of the speed and great control it offers over foam pads.

A friend of mine (the young car painter) lets me use his Makita (wool pad) on a scrap fender with his direction (actually he is not to good). I found it to be a hell of a lot smoother than the foam pad I used on a farm tractor, you just have to remember the basics like don't stop! Though, I did stop to see what exactly happened, LOL.
I used the 3M compound that Accumulator told me about and it worked really great !

I just need more information on backing plate relative to pad size. I believe (think) it makes a difference when you are using foam vs wool.
For instance, I have a 5 inch Backing P, that will work great with foam up to 6.5 inches.
However the wool pads are so "floppy" I am sort of at a loss as to what is right or wrong due to basically, realistically, no experience with wool !
Also, the Edge single sided wool pads are definitely different than the Auto G wool pads in construction and layout. The AG ones are sheepskin with a Velcro backing, Edge single edge pads have a semi rigid backing that also incorporates the Velcro (high Quality pads though).
Long story short, Backing plates will have to be different (In my mind) if you are using Edge vs AG type wool pads, but what!
Sorry to ramble, Change.

Re: Wool pad questions?

No backing plates when using the double-sided pads from Presta! While it initally seemed like a bit of an inconenience with the adapter and all, I think it's actually a decent solution.

Re: Wool pad questions?

Coupe, I think you need both blue and green.

I ordered a yellow today...somebody is bringing me a "surprise" car this weekend

Re: Wool pad questions?

I want to get to the point where i can do a full paint correction using primarily optimum polish and a choice of 3 pads. So with a blue foam edge/presta, blue foam wool edge/presta and edge/presta green wool i would be set to tackle most jobs?
