How much product to use?

I recently purchased a PC and Pinnacle XMT products. I started by using LC's orange pad along with XMT 3. I watched a few videos and read a bunch about how much product to use, speed of PC and working area, etc. so I thought I was doing it correctly. I may be but I am getting a fair amount of dust which I suspect is normal. The issue really seems to be that larger flicks of dried product seem to be coming off the pad (several mm's in size). Is that normal? If not what is the problem? Also how often should I be cleaning the pad while using? And waht should I clean it with? It does seem some product is building up on the edge of the pad. I have sprayed the pads with conditioner before starting.
