Backing Plate Broke?

So I got my big order from Danase today and immediately started on my 05 black Denali. Washed it with ONR, clayed it, then washed it again. Now I moved on to polishing, did a test section : Optimum Polish on an Orange LC Pad followed with poli-seal on a black LC pad. Looked awesome and showed no swirls under the halogens. So I started on the next portion of the car. I immediately noticed that everything seemed to be dusting much more then it was on the last section. [I think this was some of the adhesive on the backing plate] Finally the entire backing plate separated and flew off. This isn't supposed to happen I am pretty sure. Advice? I know the pad was centered and what not.

LC Backing plate 5"

Re: Backing Plate Broke?

Oh dear. I had a slightly different problem with LC plate. It screwed onto my rotary, I started the machine and it flew off it at 1500 rpm and from then on would not screw up tight onto the machine.

That's why I bought an edge BP. Super strong velcro on it.

Ah, I am going to see if bob @ danase will just let me add some money so I can get the edge bp. the velcro on this one seemed to be pretty trashy. Am I right to assume the dust was the adhesive?

Bob will take good care of you, sounds like you had the bad luck of getting a defective BP. I can't comment on the quality of the LC BPs because I don't use them, but there seem to be a lot of members that do.

The dust was either the adhesive or more likely the foam material as it was slowly breaking down/apart.

The foam on the pad?Or the foam on the plate? I could see it being the foam on the plate since it was ripped apart so jaggedly. What backing plate do you guys recommend? Any that I can pick up locally?

The foam on the plate where it tore apart.

Reading a story similar to yours a couple of years back (can't remember the brand of BP involved) made me order a spare BP just-in-case. I use a Meg's 5" BP w/o any problems, but I have read about them coming apart too. The spare I bought came from Exceldetail, but I haven't had to use it yet. I really think the LC's are decent BP's so a replacement should do fine. Bob might have a recommendation on what to replace it with, I'm sure he sells a lot of those so he should have a better idea of their track record in real world use.

Awesome, I just want to get it real quick. Hopefully I can just buy another and have it sent with the replacement I hope Bob will get me.

Re: Backing Plate Broke?

wow, that is scary. Luckily it didn't hurt you or do any damage to the paint.

I noticed you said you started after your big order arrived. Was this a brand new backing plate or something you've used for awhile already?
