Makita Rotary Question

I should be recieving my rotary on Friday or Saturday and I'm getting the Makita 9227CX3. I know it has variable speed setting and I believe that on 3 the speed is something like 1500. My question is if I wanted to polish at 1200 how would I know I"m at 1200? Do you just hold the trigger halfway down to achieve only 1200?

My second question is can I spur foam pads to clean them or should I just replace the pad when needed? How do I know when I need to change pads...? Any additional information is more then welcome.

TIA

Josh

Re: Makita Rotary Question

Its variable between 2 and 3... usually I run mine at 2.3 or 2.5 for finishing, 3.0 for polishing and 3.5 for boats/aluminum/surfaces that need a little hi-speed lovin.

Re: Makita Rotary Question

Sorry, I was off a little, 2=900 and 3 = 1500, and like MM says you can use variable speeds inbetween each setting. However, I usually always am at three except for spreading, and I never burned through paint.

Re: Makita Rotary Question

Do you do the variable speed with the trigger though?

No the trigger is on/off, you can put the dial anywhere between the numbers

Re: Makita Rotary Question

Nah, I only use the trigger for startup - ill feather it a bit to get the polish spread out, instead of changing the dial to 1 and then cranking it up to the desired RPM.

As for 2.3 - there are 3 clicks between 2 and 3, 2.3 is the first of em.

Re: Makita Rotary Question

Thanks Timmah that helped alot. Now to just convince my girlfriend that of course its perfectly safe (so I can use it on her car first) and think of a reason why I don't want the first time using it to be on my car .

Re: Makita Rotary Question

I don't spur them, the get rinsed under the tap and I dig out the buildup with my nails
Then after I've finished a car, in the washing machine they go. Triple rinse after washing (on gentle setting)
