Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 869 | 6.5" pads on a Rotary? It seems that most of the dealers recommend 7/7.5 inch pads on Rotary polishers.
Is there any problems/conditions to be aware of if you use 6.5 inch pads on a Rotary (with 5" backing plate on Rotary).
Reason: I have lots of 6.5 " LC CCS pads I purchased for the PC. Is the 5 inch backing plate correct for these pads on a Rotary?
If there is a problem or whatever please explain so I know what you are talking about.
Thank you, Changeling | |

you have better control with the 6.5 pads..less buffer hop..easy to manuver ...
your all set..no problems

Al | Very cool, thanks Al, I read loud and clear. Mind if I ask what Rotary you are using?

I use a Hitachi and a Makita...the Makita is out of service now..waiting for a part...If I had to do it again I would do a Metabo..I used my buddies and its nice..very ergonomic fitting...seems lighter and just seems to go with the flow as you use it ..if you know what I mean...it is a quality machine...quiet also..
Whitethunder...
Yes you can use the egde 2k 6" pads with a rotary..just need the rotary adapter...and your set to go...I find the 6" pads work so nice ...no fighting the rotary...they just flow...easy to keep flat..less hop...
Hope this Helps
Al

Al | I'm going to be buying a Metabo within the next few months. It would sure be nice to be able to use my 6" Edge pads with the rotary. No need to buy another set.

At the same time I hear CCS pads are running cooler than others of same size so keep that in mind too if you end up using them.

In fact, we decided that we probably will quit buying the larger pads altogether and use only the smaller pads for both the rotory and our PC's.
The only thing I can think of is that you may want to reduce your RPM a bit until you get comfortable with the smaller pad. Then you can probably kick it right back up to where you were with the larger ones. (The edge of the smaller pad will spin faster thus potentially creating more heat)
Other than that, you should be fine.

Sine the larger pads have a larger circumference, they have to travel further to make a complete circle. thus a 6" pad and a 8" pad at 1000RPM, the larger pad will spin faster. Is it enough difference to notice? IDK

"The speed at the outer edge of the pad will always be greater than the speeds inside when the pad is spinning. Simply put, the outside edge travels a farther distance in the same amount of time as the inside, which means its moving at a faster speed. Make sense?"
"Makes perfect sense. If you placed a mark on the outter edge of a 8" pad and then one at a 6" point, they would be back at the same spot at the same time. The outter HAD to move faster to get back around at the same time.
Remember a DA is oscialating. A smaller pad on a DA will move faster giving more cut."

Neither of the quotes above were his quotes, just customers relaying what he basically said. Hope that and everything makes since.
