Ok, I've been detailing vehicles for awhile now with the typical method (wax by hand) and I think that now I'm ready to move on to machine. I would like to go with the Porter Cable random orbital. I've never done this before. What should I know? I'm thinking about going to a junkyard, finding a hood or something with decent paint and practicing on that first.

Unless you can beat "Arnold" at arm wrestling, forget about screwing up paint with a PC. I just got scratches out of a 325i that I had to use a wool pad, Meg's #84 and all the pressure I could muster for a solid 60 seconds with the PC on 6, and holy tough paint Batman! the scratches came out and the paint is fine.

If you can operate a computer mouse you can operate a PC safely. It may take you a little while to become proficient with it, but to screw the paint up with a PC is a harder task than actually correcting the paint.

My grandfather, who had never even heard of a PC before, picked mine up and went at it will zero ill-effects.

Oh. Ok. I had heard lots of horror stories about burning the paint with using a machine. So, I know the PC is a good one to have, why exactly is that? What makes is so special and safer to the paint?

it spins on a access and does not have the power of a rotary, instead of spinning in the same spot it sorta mimics your hand motion when waxing
