Help! Detail shop ruined my car!

A while back I decided to wet sand and buff my new paint job. After doing a fender and a door, I decided that it was just too much work with a Porter Cable.

So I took it to a local shop that a friend recommended. They seemed to know what they were talking about and weren't hesitant about taking on the job. The first time I went to pick it up, it was full of wet sand marks and they had completely missed one fender. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and let them try again. Now it is FULL of buffer holograms and still has quite a bit of sanding marks.

Is this something I can fix with the PC, or do I need to take it to another pro?
Can anyone recommend a shop in Orlando?

If you were in San Diego I would have you bring this to me in a hurry. I cannot believe there are shops out there that can pull off $h!t like this. Good luck man . . . you will find someone in this forum for sure that can help fix your issue.

Shane- Sorry to hear about this, I too hope you gave them an earful and didn't pay for having your car damaged.

It's hard to say if you can correct that with a PC but I'd give a *tentative* "yes". At the very worst you might have to re-wetsand with 3K Meg's Unigrit and then use the most aggressive products viable for PC use, and with 4" pads. Either Hi-Temp Heavy Cut or a mix of their Extreme Cut and 1Z Ultra/Extra oughta get out 3K sanding scratches, but you'll need a follow up with something milder. But again, don't try this with larger pads, you need the 4" ones when using such rotary-centric products as the Extreme Cut.

But IMO if you can find a competent pro you'd probably be better off letting somebody with experience (and a rotary ) handle this.

Lesson: never give anybody "the benefit of the doubt" when they botch up something that they do for a living. "Pros" are supposed to be competent and if they don't get it right the first time that's usually a clue...at least when it comes to detailing.

I didn't pay them. They'll be lucky if I don't make them pay for fixing it. I hit it with an orange cutting pad 7" and Menzerna high gloss compound- no dice. It's better but I made 3 or 4 passes and it still looks like a train wreck.

Shane- You just cant get the PC to do what you want with the larger pads (and what you want/need isn't the PC's strong suit). And there aren't too many products, at least that I know of, that'll do this kind of work in a reasonable amount of time either. Gee, wish I had something more positive to say.

I fear you're gonna have to either buy stuff and spend a lot of time, or find somebody good...

Glad to hear they didn't get your money at least. Just goes to show how utterly terrible some "pros" are, huh?

I live down in Palm Bay - if you can't find anyone local to do it, shoot me a PM and I could cruise up and knock it out. I've got photos and references if desired.

Actually, I'm moving to Melbourne next month. I took a job over at Patrick. Shoot me an email with photos and we'll hook up after I relocate. I'll either be living somewhere in Suntree or James Landing across from Wickham Park.
