Sonus Scratch Removal Kit PC Counterweight Conundrum

Yay! my Sonus scratch removal kit arrived in the posts this week.

I've not tried to attached it to my PC yet, but I'm thinking I might need to mess around with the counterweight?

I've been using my PC quite happily so far with the Sonus DAS polisher Kit (6-7inch pads?) so I assume the counterweight is currently fitted (can't remember now)

We have had many counterweight discussions here. The 7224 PC comes with a 5" counterweight, while the 7336 comes with a 6". There are some who feel the counterweight makes no difference. Others of us (myself included) contend that the 6" weight makes the PC smoother at high speeds (6). I think most of us who use the 6" counterweight just leave it on, even when we are using 4" pads, it doesn't seem to negatively affect anything.

Thanks Mike. Good to know I wouldn't have broken anything if I'd been lazy! All I've got to do now is find the wrenchy thing to change the backing plate...

I just bought a 7424, and FWIW my understanding is it is now shipping with the 6" counterweight. My PC in a kit came with the 6" counterweight installed.

Didn't get the PC there, but this info came from the excellent info page at Coastal Tools (look on bottom of page):

yeap... both 7424's i've purchased (amazon.com) have the 6" counterweights installed...

I'm finding this waay hard work. The sonus scratch remover 'feels' kinda weak as it seems to take so much effort for small improvement! Is it my technique?

I've spritzed the 4" pad, put on a 'cross' of scratch remover and gone in on a setting of 3 on the PC to distribute the polish (at medium pressure). As the polish seems to get nicely spread, I move up to 5.5 or 6 on the PC dial and work it in (with good pressure). I've made two passes like this, but the swirls are only about 60% gone? The car is a ford, so I wonder if the paint is particularly hard?

I haven't tried the Sonus stuff so I don't know what you oughta expect.

It *does* sound pretty mild.. but for two passes to remove 60% isn't all *that* bad. If you use a more aggressive product you'll have to be more careful and you might have to do more than one step to get a ready-to-wax finish.

FWIW, I don't spritz my pads, but rather I distrubute the polish uniformly and prime them that way.

IIRC Ford clear is considered kinda soft...so I *am* a little surprised the 4" setup doesn't correct it faster. But there are worse things than using a safe and mild product/pad combo a few times.
