You need to have a backing plate in order to use foam pads with a velcro backing. The plate goes between the pad and the machine. You don't have to get the exact backing plate from the link in your post. Most detailing supply websites sell a backing plate you could use. So, you can order the pads & backing plate from the same place.

make sure to get plenty of pads, as you can never have enough (like microfiber towels) and be sure to only use one product per pad.

And remember, as soon as you are done with a pad, toss it into a bucket filled with soap and water (I like to use warm water if available, and woolite).

a little twist on this question...

I just ordered the 95 dollar hitachi rotary this afternoon. I have an assorted variety of 6.5" LC pads, so that's covered, but as for the backing plate. Do I need to purchase a new backing plate for the rotary or will the backing plate that I had for the PC work?

I have read, and heard, you cannot use the same backing plate for the PC and the rotary. Different threads I think. Hope this helps Neothin.
