finally got a chance to use it. Think I'm in love! Used some Speed Glaze and DACP from around 1000 rpm to 1500 rpms and got some awesome results! Switched to AIO and with a little misting found it worked pretty good. Probably won't use the AIO too much as it dries out rather fast.

Useless post other than to tell how well a cheap rotary can perform.

Which chicago unit are you using? I'm about to go ahead and get the one with the bail handle.

Any tips or advice for technique to prevent buffer burn?

I know you are not asking me, but if you stick to a nice polishing pad and don't fall asleep while buffing, you will be fine. Lower the speed around areas where you know that paint is supposed to be thinner.

I buffed out my girlfriend's Sienna today with a propel blue polishing pad and ssr2. Used PB's S&G to mist the pad very often since the van was very hot already this morning. Speed 1200rpm (makita 9227) Didn't ficus on removing bad scretches, only on swirls that were getting out of hands ( I guess due to washing) and 95%+ of it was gone (maybe more like a 99%). Used PwC to remove the holograms and applied Zymol's carbon wax on top of PwC.

A swirl free burgundy Sienna is a beautiful thing to look at

Even my girlfriend was freaking out over the shine. When she comes back from the beach I'll make it look "perfect" I mean even better.

My car is next tomorrow.

Not sure, its the variable speed with post handle. Can't comment on the bail handle, but the handle I had worked fine.

After all the reading about using a test panel...I did a bad thing and never used a test panel. Just put some #80 on a polishing pad spread it around, set it at 1k and starting going. No burns, verticles are a problem with hopping (takes a little control, raise the angle), let the weight of the machine do the work and KEEP IT MOVING!

The more and more I read of successful first time rotary users, I am more inclined to get me one. At first I thought the PC was just awesome, but now I am recognizing its limits. I bought a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited and it seems as if the paint is harder on it then it was on my Firebird. I have a hard time getting rid of swirls with it no matter what technique/product/pad I use. Maybe its time for another investment!

I've got a few REALLY NASTY black cars comming up to do, both for family members so getting them done right is a must. A rotary is about the only way I'm going to do that so I'm stuck trying to learn on my uncle's black 2000 dodge stratus.

Before I would've just done all I could with the PC (which is actually quite a bit; I've gotten really proficient with it).

Don't be too afriad of the Stratus. I cut my teeth on a rotary on a black Volvo V70 (brand new too),and it worked out alright. The big thing to look for on those Dodges is the trunk and door badging - it is absolute crap. You can burn right through the foil coating in half a second. Unless you feel like debadging it (I spent some quality time with the heat gun after that one), tape is your best friend on any Chrysler product (or 90% of the cars on the market, for that matter).

I've done a few stratuses before with my PC, so I have a basic idea of the body lines and where to watch for already. Just have to be even more careful than normal with the rotary! I'm more scared of the black paint for my first time than anything else; but I suppose I can always fix it with the PC if I need to.

And I also always tape off trim and badges when I'm working around them with any machine, ever since I managed to rip one off with the PC at speed 6

In my experience Chryslers have some pretty good paint, especially ones from that plant. I wouldn't worry too much.

I feel the same way. After seeing alot of the threads about how great the rotary is I am so tempted to picked one up at Harbor Freight and give it a try.

Thanks, I figured that out after my first couple passes.

For anyone thinking about getting one, I suggest it. Super cheap investment and it's a pretty good build.

Bought a 528i a few months ago and haven't had time to do anything but clay and s100. Hoepfully this weekend I'll break out the rotary and get some pix.
