Problem with 2 3/4 backing plate and LC orange pad

I was hoping for some advice after my first shot with the spot buffs pads and my PC. When using the orange light cut pad I noticed the pad start vibrating more than it did at the start of my polishing regimen. Upon inspection the backing pate velcro was begining to de-laminate from the physical backing plate. I ran the PC speed up to the max of 5 while using the orange pad. I also used PFW pads and white, grey and blue 4" CCS pads without this trouble. I never had this problem with my 6" and 5" pads on a 5" backing plate. Am I using too much pressure with the orange pad (the pad continued to rotate and did not bog down with the pressure I used)? I had great success with the PFW pad. Should I just ditch the orange pad and move exclusively to the PFW? It seemed to actually finish down a bit better than the orange and at the very least the same amount of haze/micromarring. I was using all pads with PB SSR 2.5 and 1. I appreciate any input that could explain this situation.

It could be a defective BP that just started to fail when you were using the orange pad. I have never used my 2 3/4" BP, I use a flexible 3.5" BP for 4" pads and have never had a problem. Patrick sells a good 3.5" BP:

3.5^^ Hook & Loop Flexiplate

I'd save the 2 3/4" BP for use with the smaller PFW pads.

Re: Problem with 2 3/4 backing plate and LC orange pad

Thanks for the advice! I will talk to autogeek about the backing plate. I was really surprised this thing started coming apart. I have never had an issue like this. I will say the heat build up with the 4" pad was significantly more than with the PFW pads. I have never experienced my PC generate that much heat with a foam pad. I also had just placed an order with Patrick and set him an e-mail to see if he could include the backing plate you suggested. If I can't get it in on this order I guess I will have to place a seperate order. I really dont get why autogeek would put the smaller backing plate in the kit if it is not the proper one for the 4" pads. That kinda frustrates me...

As mentioned, the 3.5" flexible backing plates are indeed better than the 2 3/4, and can be found here - 3.5" Dual Action Flexible Backing Plate- porter cable 7424 or 7336 hook and loop backing plate 3.5 inch.

If you can't get the backing plate with that order, just PM me and I'll hook you up with a 3.5".

Kudos to the BP's from AG. I've purchased all of my backing plates from AG, with the exception of my uber pimp 3M bp.

Yeah, I'd skip the orange (and/or yellow) foam and just use the PFW. And I'd reserve that 2.75" backing plate for use with the 3.5" PFW pads.

I'm not really sure who actually puts the kits together, but I think they're using that small 2 3/4" BP because it will fit on a rotary and with the included adapters also work on a drill or a PC. At least that's what came in my kit a few years ago. I use my 3.5" BP and 4" pads for just about everything I do with my PC. Sometimes I'll use a bigger pad with the UDM, but even then for any kind of correction I like to go no larger than ~ 5.5".

^You got it....the 2 3/4" BP makes the kit a lot more versatile. We are thinking of modifying it, though.

Maybe make it an either/or option so people can do what seems right for *their* specific situation.

I agree, a lot of people dont know the difference. If given 2 choices they may start to inquire what are the differences.

Re: Problem with 2 3/4 backing plate and LC orange pad

I have to say the either/or option sounds great...I also wanted to take the time to thank Matt at autogeek. He promptly resolved my backing plate issues through a PM message. Customer service like this is virtually unheard of these days and I trully do want to thank Matt@autogeek and do appreciate the quick resolution to my backing plate issue. Autogeek has definitely earned repeat business from me.
