Why do I keep getting holograms via UDM?

I've been getting really frustrated with my UDM and Menzerna polishes. Two weeks ago I polished the passenger's side of my Scion tC with IP and an orange LC pad. It looked pretty good, but just in case there was some micromarring I couldn't see (my halogen wouldn't fire up... probably a dead bulb) I followed up with FP on a white pad. Each time, I put 2 sprays of XMT conditioner on the pad, then applied polish, spread at 3, and worked in at 6.

The IP broke down quickly on the orange LC pad, within 2 passes. However, the FP would not break down at all. I went at it with decent pressure at speed 6 for 3 minutes, and it looked the same as it was after spreading. I buffed it off after about 5 minutes thinking it must be done, and it did look good. I moved on to the next panel, determined to break it down. After 9 minutes however, I still couldn't get it to go clear and oily. It just wouldn't break down.

I finished up the rest of the panels this way, and after a quick wash put on a coat of wax. About a week later, I looked at the car in the sun, and noticed holograms all over!

Today I decided to tackle the holograms, so I thought FP with a white pad worked in long enough would remove the holograms. I went at the entire passenger's side, with not much better luck breaking the polish down. After I was done, however, the car looked holo-free. So I gave it a wash to get rid of any dust, and went to a sunny part of the driveway to check it out. To my dismay, I saw some holograms. However, they were just barely noticeable. I put on a coat of wax, thinking I could live with it until the next polish. However, after the wax, I went back outside and noticed even more holograms. About the same amount as when I started! How is this possible?

I thought the UDM was wasn't supposed to make these horrid marks! Is there something wrong in my technique that is causing these holograms to keep reappearing?

What wax are you applying? It probably is the wax that is smearing and making it look like you have holograms.

It's Dodo Juice, a European paste wax. I doubt it's the wax, I removed it entirely. Plus, the first time I noticed the holograms it was nearly two weeks after application and the car went through a wash and three rainfalls.

Are you sure the pad is spinning freely? I usually mark my pad to make sure that it spins some. Also, if you move too quickly with the machine is causes holograms. My friend did that on his black E46 and it was horrid. You have to take some patience with the product and move slow and break it down completely

For the polish, are you applying too much? And is the pad wet or something? I never got over 3 minutes of work time with FP and my PC before...well...until I accidentally spritzed it too much...

Yeah, there's no way I was moving too fast. At most 1.5"/second, but on average around 1 inch per second. However, there is the possibility that I was giving too much pressure as I did see the pad slow down in its spinning sometimes.

Mark the pad, it'll be the best thing you've ever done and it helps a ton

Good advice. Not trying to be too technical, but mark the backing plate that way you won't have to mark all your pads.

Haha, that works too Legacy. I usually do a straight line on both so it lines up for me

Re: Why do I keep getting holograms via UDM?

DA's don't create holograms.

My guess is you are seeing marring..

Marring with a DA comes from either not working the polish long enough or conversly working the polish too long

Are you working the product all the way to a dry buff? That could be a cause since there is no more lubrication once the product is dry.
