Take a black sharpie and just put a line on your backing plate or the part of the buffing pad that you see while you are polishing. Basically you'll see a black blur when you turn on the PC and when you put it on the surface you are polishing. The PC is supposed to rotate some so this just makes sure you aren't putting so much pressure that you bog the machine down
I find that IP dusted a lot when I bogged down the machine like that so it was an improvement when I marked the backing plate and pad to make sure that it was spinning a bit
