first time with rotary

I am a painters assistant at a huge semi (tractor trailer) auto body shop. Today he was gone and the boss wanted a car just glazed (it was an older honda). So I broke out the vector, foam pad, and some 3M glaze and got to work. (I've never used it on a car, only to polish huge gas tanks, rims, etc on a semi) Lets just say I surprised at how easy and fun it was. I was thinking of getting a PC for home, but this may have changed my mind! I know I wasn't polishing so I really didn't have to worry much about burning through. Just wanted to say, for those on the fence, a rotary is awesome!!

Good for you! Just keep it slow, easy and comfortable and you will do fine.

Re: first time with rotary

Thanks! Yeah, I had it set on like 2 I believe (not sure how fast that is), but it seemed to be working nice. Kinda worried at first, as when I polish aluminum and stuff, I don't have to worry about burning through.

Re: first time with rotary

Just keep practicing and you will get better at it. I started on a rotary and been using it ever since. I've owned a PC but hardly ever used it for anything so I sold it.

Re: first time with rotary

I was wondering, with a rotary, how do you guys get on all the panels where you can't even get the pad close to being flat or have enough room. If Im ploishing, I'd be afraid of instantly burning through. And how do you get in the corners and like by the edges without worrying? Sorry for the questions. At work they usually just go over the trucks fast so its not like their worried about taking all the swirls/marks out.

Not burning the paint is one thing, not leaving holograms is another thing all together.

at the same time, polishing metal is hard. there is no clear to work. i have polished aluminum gas tanks and leaving it completely swirl free is harder than it looks.

but i do agree, i just saw a black escalade at the store right now than was shine, but damn it had some serious holograms. worse part is the owner actually commented to me how good his car looked under the lights. he said you can really see the shine of the lights in the paint, me and my wife just agreed.
