Makita 9227 backing plate

Hello everyone,

I purchased a Makita 9227 after my DA decided to take a long break.

I'm pretty uncomfortable using 8" pads with the default 7" backing plate and thus am thinking of using 5" and 6.5" pads instead.

Can I use a the 4" backing plate for the 6.5" pad? Is it safe?

Thanks.

no it is to small. (it would safe but not efficient at all). You need at least a 5" bp

can you use the 6.5 plate without damaging the 6.5 pads?

Maybe, but it would be risky. The backing plate could come in contact with the paint fairly easily.

I reccomend that you use a 4 3/4inch backing plate from LC mated to a 6.5inch LC foam pad or anything of similar size. It gives lots of room for error and still maintains control of the pad quite well.

Re: Makita 9227 backing plate

For 6" pads I use a 5" Megs BP, I use to use a 4 3/4" but found it too small. For 6.5" pads I use a 6" LC BP, it gives the perfect amount of plate behind the pads for control and effectiveness with a safe distance from the edge of the pad. A 4 3/4" BP for 6.5" pads is far too small, LC recommends a 6" BP for their 6.5" pads.
