PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

I just picked up a 7424 and it says to "Use 5 inch Pad Only". Can I use 6.5in pads? I never seen this before

You can certainly use a 6.5" pad. You should change backing plates to a 6" though for better pad support.

What would be the cons against not getting a 6" backing plate with using a 6.5" pad?

A lack of edge support. You would lose effectiveness as you move towards the edge. Probably other issues I am unaware of.

icic.

Which 6" backing plate should I use? What about this

Porter-Cable Backing Pads, Polishing Pads & Counterweights

or these

Hook And Loop Backing Plates feature Velcro brand hook & loop fasteners to hold foam pads in place. lake country backing plate, lake country foam

If I get the 6" backing plate, do I need a counter weight as well?

Folks dont find a huge difference in #5 vs. #6 counterweights. But its my belief the counterweight should match the BP width.

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

i have a 5" backing plate and use 5.5" 6.5" and 4" pads...the only thing I notice, and ZI dont know if its related, is that with the smaller pad, its hard to stop the rotaion of the pad on speed 6. With a 6.5" pad, I can almost stop the spin if I apply enough pressure. With the smaller pads, that is harder to do...

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

Saw this on the AG site

# The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-125DA measures 5 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads up to 7.5”.

# The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-148DA measures 6 Inches in Diameter and is perfect for pads 7.5" up to 8.5”.

So should I get the 5" BP?

Well I already ordered the Meguiars pads which are 6.5".

I think they have their own backing plate too...

Dual Action Polisher Backing Plate W64DA Product Information

Would that work fine?

Re: PC 7424, "Use 5 inch Pad Only"???

I actually prefer to use a 6" plate with 6.5" pads and a 5" plate with 5.5" pads and a 3.5" plate with 4" pads...

on the rotary, I use a 6" with 6.5" pads...

call me crazy, but I have more control and it doesnt bog the PC down as much as a small plate with a bigger pad...(5" plate with 6.5" pad), not to mention faster results
