Re: What Do You Collect?

I'm just too cyber-paranoid to be listing anything I have, but I *do* enjoy seeing all the neat stuff you folks have collected.

Spilchy- Your grandfather's Sub might be even more beat up than mine, props on not having it (cosmetically) restored

When did you get that UDT watch? I don't remember it...

Re: What Do You Collect?

I have a collection of key chains from all around the world. Different countries that I've been to and my brother has been to. Last count was 58 different countries.
I also collect guns, more for the shooting sports aspect than the collecting. Last count was 27 firearms including a WWII battle used M1 Garand in unrestored condition.

Busse's are beautiful knives. Maybe look into the Scrap Yard knives, alot cheaper, but very very strong, SR-77 steel. The new SOD (Son of DogFather) is very nice.

I got it in the past year. I am building a type set for WW2 military watches. Basically an example of each from every American maker from the War. This was the most expensive to date. My father agreed to split the cost with me because I wanted it so bad! As soon as I saw it, I had to have given it 100% original condition. It hadn't been touched in decades. I bought a NOS mainspring and complete balance from a spare parts military bin out of old watchmaker's estate (I still have the original packaging they came in). My brilliant watchmaker overhauled the movement and polished the thick glass crystal a bit to try to remove many of the scratches. He used a special paste to do it but stopped because it would take him hours and can ruin the optics of the glass. So it retains that patina that I love because it was actually used and tells a story. This dial says "USN BUSHIPS" which stands for United States Navy Bureau of Ships.

I love that Submariner. I remember playing with it as a kid. I really like how the dial retains the luminous material that has aged to that beautiful patina (and shines bright too after 40+ years). According to my research it is considered more valuable because the dial has the "200m/660feet" wording instead of the opposite 660feet/200m. It was the earlier version.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Re: What Do You Collect?

Seth,
Out of curiosity, what's the approximate value of that 1940's Rolex Dress watch you have? That is a sharp looking watch...simple looking, but yet you can tell it is a nice piece.

I think the coolest part of your collection is that it is obviously something that many generations of your family have enjoyed (or at least some of the watches anyways), and you can tell that you really value that.

Thanks! I have the watch insured for $2,500.00. That is probably the retail if you were to buy it from an antiques place or vintage watch store. If I were to sell it to one of those places, I'd get less obviously.

Re: What Do You Collect?

Well, it looks like I'm not alone!

I had a Rolex 5513 Sub (meters first) and a 16610 Sub, but sold them. Right now, I have a Speedmaster Pro 3572.50 and a Tag Heuer Link Tiger Woods WJF2113. The Speedmaster is an awesome watch!

My Uncle has a SS Daytona, current Seadweller, 5512 Sub, and a Speedmaster Pro.

In the future, I'm looking at getting a Gemini or Apollo Speedmaster.

Other than watches, I have an assortment of old car waxes and polishes - oldest being from the 1920's.

Re: What Do You Collect?

I have been collecting Jordan shoes for a while now. Sad I know, however I have my first pair I bought a 14-year old, these original Jordan's are now becoming very collectable.

Also, I have a small collection of watches.

Re: What Do You Collect?

I started a collection I've been meaning to start for a while. Mortar and pestles!

I was at a estate sale and picked up a solid marble one yesterday. It's my first one. Who knows how big the collection will get through my career.
