Replacement Car Remote/Fob

I recently bought a 1996 VW Passat GLX, however, the guy that sold it to me lost the fob. As far as i can tell, it had an alarm & keyless entry, but it could have had other feature as well....im not sure. I went called a couple of dealers up and they said that the remote was discontinued. So, i'm wondering if i can buy a replacment remote anywhere without having to put in an entirely new system? If anyone has done this, or knows of one such remote it will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

J

I'm not 100% sure, but you might check e-bay. I'm thinking you may be able to get a new key that would pop into the old remote, reprogram it and you'll be done. Of course you'd have to get the key cut and I have no idea if it's possible. Just an idea. I know Autozone sells remotes too. I'm assuming you have the key built into the remote. If its just a regular remote definitely look into e-bay or Autozone. Good luck.

Thanks! its actually just a remote, the key is separate from the remote. Actually i checked ebay and their was nothing there, i found this <http://www.carremotes.co.nz/4_in_1_remote.html> but im not sure if "nearly any fixed code remote controlled application" means the passat. I have never seen the factory remote, so i dont know the frequency or if it has an immobiliser chip, etc... So, i'm not sure if they make aftermarkey replacements or if its even possible to use the existing wiring with a new remote...thanks

You're not kidding! I've looked through 33 pages on e-bay and nothing. I don't know what it even looks like. I'd give autozone a try and look online for a way to program it. I really can't believe e-bay has nothing. Not too often you can't find what you want on e-bay.
