Home Remodeling and Construction

How many of you guys do your own remodeling and construction? I love doing this kind of work myself. It's a nice change from sitting behind the desk all day.

Let's see some of your projects!

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

My favorite hobby, right behind detailing... just finished a major kitchen remodel last month. Did the tearout, minor electrical, all the new trim on new cabinets, base, chair rail, crown moulding and backsplash myself. Had the pros build the cabinets and paint them.

Did one bathroom last year but no pics....

Took forever but soooooo worth it. Couple befores and afters.....

Starting the tearout:

I am replacing all my windows this fall. Next spring will probably build a shed in my back yard.

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

Well, I try to do as much around the house as I can, in order to save money that I can spend on toys. My house is for sale, and we are going to be building a new house once it sells. When we build the new place, I will probably do all the ceramic tile work, finish the bonus room, install the surround sound / home theater wiring, do the crown molding, all the landscaping, and as many other little things as I can to save some money. Plus, by doing all of this, I find I am able to take more pride in my home, since I had a hand in building it.

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

Great work Red98gt!!!

I do little things around the house. I do architecture all day long at a desk so it's fun to play on the other side of it once and a while. I ripped up carpet and sanded my hardwood floors. It didn't turn out like I wanted so I'm going to redo them again next summer. Nothing ever goes as planed with an old house that's for sure.

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

I do inside house painting and refinishing of wood floors for others and I also install wood flooring.

Keeps me busy as I do these jobs generally in the winter to keep busy and bring in some extra cash flow.

I also make two or three custom stained glass windows art pieces. These take so much time that I generally break even when finished but are they beautiful.

The trend for the last ten years is to have a stained glass window installed on the inside over the exterior window in their bathroom area over the tub or sauna. Due to my safety concerns I enclose all stained glass windows with plexiglass to the interior side to prevent issues.

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

LOL not much of remodeling, but around a week ago i went on top of the roof to try and figure out why our ceiling was leaking when it rains. well after climbing up there (heights = ), i found one shingle that slid all the way down to where there was a big square gap (shingles should be checked at least once a year IMO as wind, etc.. can move them sometimes). i ended up pushing it back in and hopefully we are good to go...

Re: Home Remodeling and Construction

This is my master bath I did 3 years ago. I removed a wall between the toilet and vanities. Added a doorway at the entry because the bath was set up motel style without a door by the vanities. I did all phases of construction, demo, drywall, plumbing, carpentry, electrical( I added the spa tub so I ran a new line to the box), cabinet install, sinks, faucets, tile, grout, crown moulding and finish carpentry! It cost me about $7,000.00 in material and I saved about $20,000 in labor. I also designed the entire project and my wife and I picked out all the materials.

I tried 3 times to upload pics and it would not let me! They are in jpg format and of the right size. Any one out there to help?
