Attractions near Providence, Rhode Island?

Weird topic, I know, even for the Hot Tub. We're planning (very last minute) to consider going to Rhode Island for a day and a night. Plan on taking a look at the colleges there (Brown), but we also need attractions that we can go see. Any suggestions?

The Foxy Lady is always a good take I think most of the dancers there go to Brown too!

AL-53, WaterFire looks like a very nice place. It'll definitely be part of our itinerary!

Opps, I think I spelled it wrong...it should have been Foxxy Lady! And I am not kidding that most of the girls there go to Brown.

Providence has really boomed in the last 10 years so there are a tons of shops and restaurants to eat at. The Providence Place Mall is always enjoyable to the ladies. And while your there you have to hit the Cheesecake Factory for dinner and dessert!

Hilarious!

Seriously though, there are now many good shops & restaurants in the city and Waterfire is great. Not too sure that there's anything there that I would term an "attraction" though. If you're not going to the Foxxy then I would take a drive to Foxwoods.

Brown University. Great School. I am a member of the Bruin Class of 1975.

Great attractions beside viewing the Brown campus. Newport R.I about 30 minute west on I-195 or Boston which is about 30 miles north up I-95.

Re: Attractions near Providence, Rhode Island?

We just finished up 6 days there - with kids. Providence ended up being mostly a hub for us as there were other things nearby we wanted to do. Here's what we did -

- Whale watching in Cape Cod
- Craigville beach in Cape Cod, along with the requisite visit to Cooke's for clam chowder and Four Seas for homemade ice cream
- Newport RI (I lived there 20 years ago)
- Tiverton RI and Fogland beach
- In Providence - a daytime walk around the waterfront where the Waterfire festival is held, a visit to the mall (Dave&Busters, Movie Theater)

We stayed at the Marriott Downtown Providence. Of these, I'd recommend the Whale watching and the visit to Tiverton. Tiverton is very rural so you should visit only if you want to get away from the city.

Re: Attractions near Providence, Rhode Island?

Thank you Rob and TrueDetailer.. We're only going for two days, so we probably won't be able to make it to Cape Cod and Tiverton.

So we're probably going to waterfire, slater mill, brown university, and mall-shopping. Do you guys think we should stay one night at a hotel? It's going to be 3.5 hour drive to rhode island from NY.

I spend a week at Craigville Beach every year...its a great place and we are within walking distance to Four Seas

Re: Attractions near Providence, Rhode Island?

A Providence native, I reccomend you check out either Alforno or TEN for the best eats in town by FAR. Providence easily has some of the best food in the entire country.
