I'm looking to replace the windows and sliding door in my house. We are not looking to go crazy because we don't plan on staying in the house for more than 3-4 years. We would like some replacement windows that will be energy efficent and help in the resale of the house. I don't know much about windows so what options are a must to have in New Jersey ex. low e, argon, etc.?

Just replaced all of the windows and doors in my house and many of my friends have done the same. As a selling feature I would go with a local company like NuSash if you have such that is well known but cheap. If you are only talking vinyl replacement windows there is not a lot of difference in the brands that are priced around the $200 each range. You want a good install and a decent warranty. You can get replacement double panes for around $30 each so don't pay high dollar for warranty as I've never seen a properly installed frame fail.

As far as sliding doors I would go with an Andersen 400 series as that offers the wood interior. You can drop down to the 200 series for all vinyl but I think that is too big of a piece for all vinyl. I bought a slider to install (new) in my house off ebay. Check there as in NJ I would think you could find some deals. I got a $5,000 Pell for $612 (woot!).

Thanks Autoeng!!! We have 4 estimates coming this week. Tonight is Home Depot just to see how they compare against the local installers. We'll see what all four say. I'm curious to compare what they think is necessary for our house. Thanks again

I didn't address options, sorry. Low-E is a given anywhere. It blocks UV rays and allows the house to stay cooler in the summer. I got argon filled free as they were running a special but I wouldn't pay specifically for it as how do you know you really got it? There have been a lot of lawsuits over companies charging for argon but not actually supplying it.
