Make Autopia.org more friendly!

Here's how. I don't know if this has been suggested, but I couldn't figure out a meaningful way to search for it.

Alas: I have included a link to a completely random forum post at airliners.net. Click HERE to View!

In it you will notice things that are abbreviated. Such as RSW, U5, ORD. Notice that all of these have small dots under them to indicate that there is more info. Hover over them and viola- the information you desire.

Note- This is all done server side. You type DG in a post, and in the thread hover over DG, you get Duragloss. I've hung out here a while and still find myself at the secret decoder page. With this type of implication, many new users wouldn't type such post as - What is Z5 following P21, with a PC application, over a CC MB made in 03?

Catch my drift. Anywho, I am no programmer but I'm sure someone around here could make this happen.

Thanks for listing to my rant.
Barrett

Re: Make Autopia.org more friendly!

That is a cool link. It looks a lot similar to some pages where they have words double underlined in green and if you hover over them you get ads. Ugh!

I thought it might be J_ava_S_cript, but it still worked when I turned JS off. I sent an email to them to see if it was JS or their Forum Software. I'll post if I get a reply.

Re: Make Autopia.org more friendly!

On another forum that I go on, things that are abbreviated have a link, and when you press it, a java.script prompt pops up, showing what it stands for. It also does conversions. If you type in "12 in.", it converts to "12 inches=1 foot". Personally, I don't find the need if we have the secret decoder ring, but I suppose it would be better for the newbies.

edit: Why is the term "java.script" banned?

Re: Make Autopia.org more friendly!

I get the feeling that David tried to implement this, but something happened.

Like the "go to first new post" feature, I guess this one never got fixed after the update...

As I recall, that feature is available in a newer version of vB than what we're currently running. Something like it may become available the next time we have a forum upgrade. (fingers crossed)

If the key word you mention was allowed, it would be possible to embed scripts in posts, and that can be a bit risky. For example, it would be pretty easy for me to write a script that flooded your desktop with new browser instances, eventually crashing your Windows session.

Re: Make Autopia.org more friendly!

I really wish I had that hover-over-the-word-for-an-explanation functionality on my trip schedule. It would make PA's so much easier...

The flightdeck is a blur of activity... switches being thrown, system tests taking place, clearances gotten, FMC's being programmed, performance figures being run... oh yeah, I guess I should say hello to the folks..."Good morning everyone, welcome aboard flight *look down at trip schedule* "111, service to..." *look down at trip schedule* -MAF....MAF? WTH is MAF? *whispering* hey, Cap, you know what city MAF is? *Cap whispers back..."We're going to MAF? WTH is MAF? Never heard of it... Hey, is your finger still on the PA button"?

Of course, this has never happened to me...
