Saltwater

Anyone else into saltwater fish/reef tanks?

I just started a new tank 6 months ago. 55 gallon/drilled with a 20 gallon sump. This hobby is such a blast and so rewarding, and also EXPENSIVE

Right now I have
-70 lbs of live rock
-(2) Black Clowns
-(1) Skunk Shrimp

Corals
-Mushrooms
-Zoas
-Kenya Tree
-Dead mans finger

My tank is fairly new and I won't be adding anything for another few months, I am trying to fight my algae problem, and I think I am winning.

Future/near plans. T5 lighting, ALOT more corals, and a few more fish

Here is a short vid. clip of my tank. There is not much in it yet, the thing about Saltwater tanks is you have to add things SLOWLY, or else you are looking for trouble.

Also, here is my 10 gallon Coral grow tank

Re: Saltwater

I've always wanted a salt water set up, but I'm too lazy and don't even take care of my freshwater tank like I should, so for now a saltwater tank is out of the question for me. You should take some pictures, I'm sure some of us would love to see it

Re: Saltwater

Cool tank. Someday I might try my hand at a salt tank, but I'm content with our freshwater tanks for now. We have a 30 with a tiger oscar who's turned into a wuss, he keeps the guppies around as buddies now. He got really sick at the beginning of the year and after he recovered he's a lot different. Last week we decided to shake things up a bit and introduced a blue Texas cichlid. The colors on the oscar really flared up, it pissed him off, but within a few hours the Texas was kicking the oscar's tail and we had to go buy a screen to put between them to see if they can come to terms. We'll leave that in place for a few more days until we can supervise them for awhile after we take it out.

We also have a couple of small guppy tanks, but the fun part was what we found last week at an estate sale. We picked up a 55 gallon setup, complete with filters, stand, etc, and a tank full of cichlids and other stuff. It's a great community tank, very active. There's well over $200 worth of fish alone, we paid $130 for everything. I'll tell you, moving that and getting it set up again took a few hours out of our weekend.

Re: Saltwater

I've got too many expensive hobbies already... as much as I'd love to get into salt water tanks I don't think my wallet could handle the abuse.

Good call... I honestly picked up a side job just to afford it. The most expensive part of the tank is the Live Rock. Here, live rock is $9.00 a pound, and I have 70 pounds, you do the math.

Re: Saltwater

We have a 55g FOWLR that's been up and running for just over 4 years. It's a very expensive hobby, but also rewarding once you have your system up and running. Good luck with the tank.
