This will ruin any farmers day!

UPDATE BELOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This happened the other day when this farmer was harvesting some summer wheat. This combine was a 1987 CaseIH 1460 Axial Flow. He was harvesting and a bearing caught fire inside the combine where the wheat is separated from the trash. All that was very dry and naturally caught fire and he drove the combine to the edge of the field until it was in a safe place. This is a total loss piece of equipment, it was worth about $50,000.

It's a sad day for CaseIH fans everywhere.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

His insurance will cover it; if he has any. Farm Bureau to the rescue.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

That sucks, I hope he had some form of insurance to cover for that.

This might be a good candidate to see on Pimp My Ride? I'd love to see all the rediculous things they would add on.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

My next door neighbor is a "BIG" time farmer and once in a while he has som major things break or go wrong (Murphy's Law), however i have never seen that level of thing happen to him. He does have these big fire extinguishers on board but I don't know if he has ever used them.
Change
PS. I really feel sorry for him, farmers work harder than any of the people I have ever known!! They deserve lots of "breaks" in my opinion.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

We have loaned the farmer in question our older International 615 combine to bring in the rest of his crop before it goes bad in the field.

It's great to see all the competing farmers around here banding together to help someone in need.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

I just visited this story over at tundra solutions.com and there are a couple of members over there willing to donate some money to this farmer. People are willing to send in $5 or so bucks and I will make sure that the farmer in question gets the money to go toward his new combine. New ones are about $250,000. Hell, even one of this condition is about $50,000. He has insurance, but it wont cover everything and the farmer will still take a hit.

I guess that the members over at ts.com are willing to get things started to donate some money, anyone over here interested?

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

Wow -- very sad and scary. Just fork out about $300K for one of these:

I lived on a farm in ND for the first 20 years of my life.

Heh, yeah, combines can go up past the 300k mark. Caterpillar and Lexion makes a model that is 560hp and 350k.

Re: This will ruin any farmers day!

One day I was helping a friend of ours a couple farms over roll bale some hay. He had about 40 acres cut, and raked up and it was getting ready to storm so I took our 4230 JD and JD 530 baler over to help out.
I was running along with him on the windrow beside me when all of a sudden he stopped and and jumped out of his tractor cab and ran over beside me with a fire extinguisher. I stopped and he instantly started spraying it underneath the hood. It turns out he saw a flicker of flame under the hood and I didn't know about it.
It turns out the alternator had caught fire, but no other damage was done. I went up to his shed and "borrowed" an alternator off one his JD's and we finished without any more problems.
