Anyone try software to learn a language?

I've read that the best way to learn a language is through immersion but that is just not possible for me. I really don't want to hire a tutor or take a class. I was curious if anyone has had success with language software like Rosetta Stone?

Re: Anyone try software to learn a language?

Depends which language. I had some success with German with the Rosetta stone type stuff, (understood, never spoke much), and zero success with Japanese. Couldn't make out one single word in Tokyo, but Japanese is tough without immersion.

Spanish I pick up from the street, and it's much more useful here in Southern Cal.

What language are you trying to learn?

I have the Rosetta Stone Spanish. Never got real serious about it, but I did like it. For me, the big advantage was that they have 4 native speakers pronounce each word so your mind doesn't hear the exact same thing over and over.

Yah I was looking at the Rosetta Stone Spanish but it's so damn expensive. I'm curiious if the cheaper software is as effective.

Re: Anyone try software to learn a language?

The free podcasts at the Apple store are good, but not many native speakers. But for free you can't go wrong.

I second the podcasts, they're pretty good, some even have booklets to download to follow along too.
