waterproofing shoe spray - what exactly is it?

Since I know companies love to resell cheap products for much more by giving it a special name, I'm wondering whether that shoe spray they sell in most shoe stores is really nothing more than a cheaper product.

Does anyone know? What about the generic silicon waterproofing sprays you see in the camping section?

Sprays like that in shoe stores are nothing but profit for them. I used to go to this place in Houston to by shoes called Larry's Shoes (a chain that I don't think is here anymore), and they would always try to sell you mink oil, waterproofing spray, socks, and all other kinds of gear to go with your shoes. If you would have actually bought all the stuff they pedaled your shoes would cost $300.
