Borrow my tools? Uhm no.

Yesterday I had an awkward situation happening, I wanted to see your guys' opinion on this.

A few weeks ago, I bought a bunch of Zaino products, plus a PC and two Edge polishing pads.

Yesterday a family friend comes by and says `Hey I heard you got a buffer... are you using it right now? Can I borrow it?`. This couple is known to mooch. I explained to him that I am intending to do this as a job on the side, how much the machine & pads cost, and the swirl remover, waxes etc.

I offered to do his car (black in pretty terrible condition) for $20 (family price, mainly for me to practice more with my PC). He said he may have the money in a couple of weeks. He didn't seem too understanding.

Do you guys lend out your tools/ equipment at all? I mean people don't honestly think they can just borrow a polisher, pads etc. for nothing?

$20? I'd have made my price higher for him. I don't like borrowers; they always become "stealers"

I guess it depends on who I would lend it to. It doesn't sound as if you're to keen on this guy. If it was a good buddy or family member and he knew what he was doing, then I wouldn't mind. If your family member were to damage anything it's doubtful that he is going to replace it since he doesn't have $20. If you do lend it to him, make sure he provides his own pads and polishes. I wouldn't let him use your Zaino. Just give him your old Turtle Wax. =).

Lol! Nah I live in the North West, Oregon.

He's a nice guy, but he has no clue on detailing. He didn't know the difference between a PC and a rotary, that you should clay first, that you can't buy pads at Autozone, etc.

You're right... if I'd lend anything to him, it would be just the 7424 itself... he would need to supply his own polishes & pads. I was trying to explain to him that there's more to just `get a polisher and go to town`.

There are very few people I loan out my tools to. Its just too much hassle when something goes wrong, I'd rather bit a **** and say no then to be much worse when they don't return it. I once had a co-worker (who I had not even seen outside of work) ask to borrow my minty 3 year old truck so he could move! I was like ***????

Just lend him the PC, tell him he has 1 week and you'll need it back. Chances are he won't go out and buy anything and if he does I'm sure you'll get a good laugh when he's done. As long as he doesn't drop the PC there isn't much to ruin but it's just not worth it.

it is a tough spot since you are related to the guy...but if it was me i wouldn't. it's not a good sign if he has to "come up with" $20 in a few weeks. like said above...if he can't cover $20...then he can't cover replacing anything he might ruin. no good can come of it...

I let no one borrow my tools, not even family.
They can come over to my house and use them when im present but they cannot take them.

I loaned out my 10” Waxmaster orbital polisher years ago and haven’t gotten it back.

The guy keeps trying to give it back but I always manage to dodge it.
