Help choosing 2 way radios

I am looking for a recommendation for two way radios. I know nothing about them.

They will be used to communicate a distance of 20 acres, throughout the woods with a long beach front that has a 30' drop from the top of the property down to the beach front.

It needs to re-charge quickly, be secure, rugged, be crisp and clear over the 20 acre coverage and look ergonomically correct.

It is for my boss who needs to communicate while on his 20 acre summer property. Price really isn't an option but something around a $100 a piece would suffice.

Thanks for your help

Re: Help choosing 2 way radios

There were a bunch of us who recently used different 2-ways on a snowboarding trip. My GF brought her dad's motorola's and another couple had a pair of cobra's. IMHO, i think the Cobra's were much better. They were clearer, sleeker, and looked more like a cell phone. Their group had a much easier time of communicating then we did. They just got tehirs before the trip at Best Buy for about $60 a pair. They are rechargeable and seemed to hold a charge very well (All day without needing to charge). The motorala's used AA batteries which is good for some reasons bad for others. I like that fact that with AA batteries you can simply keep a backup on you in case yours die. On the other hand, who wants to carry around more batteries.

Sorry I can't let you know what Cobra models the other couples were using, but they look like the newer nextels (Square, boxy, somewhat thin)

Re: Help choosing 2 way radios

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

My boss settled on the digital Motorola DTR650. It's pretty sick! Plus given that it is 1 Watt, it doesn't require an FCC license. Motorola Government and Enterprise - Motorola DTR650 - portable digital on-site two way radios - Motorola US

He won't use 1/10 of the features, but when you're a millionaire and have the money, you want the coolest toy on the block!

I spoke with a few technical folks at various retailers and they said this sucker is more than enough for what he wants.

Re: Help choosing 2 way radios

So far the best price I got is $285.00 a pop with the long whip antenna. One retailer has been very accommodating and I'm going to give them the opportunity to match or beat that price. Plus they even offered to let my boss demo them first BEFORE he buys them, which I think is very cool and accommodating.

He's going to get 4 of them. I even joke with him how ridiculous these things are for what he is going to do. Like he'll be on some covert special ops search and destroy mission. He just simply laughs, agrees and says, "but aren't they coolest?!"

Sounds like a cool boss! You should talk him into being that free with the $$ for salaries! I bet he will like that! LOL
