Whats a good "over the counter" home carpet cleaning machine?

I'm looking for a carpet cleaning machine for home use. Most likely an upright machine. What do you folks recommend? Who has what and is it any good?

I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on something like that myself. Bissell's Proheat 2x have gotten very good reviews from what I've gathered during my research. Most notably because they heat the already hot tap water to at least twice the temperature. Many who have used them say that feature when combined with the rotating brushes leave their carpet's as good if not cleaner than when the have the pro come in.

I'll second the Bissell Proheat. Have had one for a couple of years. Cheap to buy and it works very well.

If you already have a wet/dry vac, the Sears Carpet Cleaning Kit works quite well. It hooks up to a faucet (so you can adjust the temp of the water) and it's easy to switch between shampoo (via siphon-feed) and clear water for rinsing.

Otherwise, the little ones are handy for small (e.g., pet) messes.

Do you have a pic of that Sears kit? I looked on their website but couldn't find it.

That Bissell 2x is awesome. We have dogs so a carpet cleaner is a must. It does do as good of a job, if not better than the professional machines. We love it.

Our Hoover has performed pretty well. But it's our first steam cleaner and we've never had the "pros" do it before, so I don't know how it compares.
