Linux users?
How many Linux users are out there? I've just ordered parts for a new computer and am thinking of making it into a home theatre machine using MythTV on Ubuntu, or maybe just KnoppMyth. Never really used Linux before... A little Unix but not much. Know of any good sites to help me understand some of the Linux basics? Installing scripts, checking settings, finding driver etc...
Thanks
- Andrew

I use Linux...Specifically KDE 3.5.5 on OpenSUSE 10.2
However I don't know many good websites - I will do some searching and post if I find anything

Re: Linux users?
I haven't seen any good comprehensive guides. There are a few books that are ok, but most books are just man (as in the command man <command) pages that have a few examples. My recommendation is to use del.icio.us, the bookmark site to find whatever you need.

Re: Linux users?
FreeBSD Unix User here. Check out freebsdforums.org/forums. Good place to start. A little info on the OS of choice would be helpful too.. There is alot of info out there. A quick google gives plenty!

Re: Linux users?
Well... *most* of my computer parts showed up today. The DVD drive and heatsink adapter will show up tomorrow. Gotta be honest, staring at this pile of parts is daunting. I haven't built a computer since I was in high school.

Re: Linux users?
There is a mailing list for Myth TV that should be useful in getting it set up and running.
mythtv-users Info Page
Ubuntu also has everything from IRC channels to Web forums and mailing lists. There is a fairly large and active community of users.

Re: Linux users?
Big Linux fan here. Using Ubuntu Edgy Eft at home and Fedora Core 6 at work. I swear I get a thrill from trying to get crap to just work on linux, even though most things are ready to run nowadays.

Re: Linux users?
Ubuntu is awesome. So far that's my favorite version of Linux.

Re: Linux users?
I've been using Suse Linux for the last year now. I got so bored with Windows. I wish I could do my Audio/Video Encoding in Linux and I just might dump MS for good.

Have you tried Wine or the commercial version Crossover Linux? The list of Windows apps that they support is growing every day.

Re: Linux users?
Yeah I did try Wine a few years ago and it wasn't as robust as one would like and not everything ran well in it.
I've heard it's gotten better though. Actually with the growth of Multi-Core Processors and Virtualization is now supported by the chipsets/processors I'm leaning towards installing a WinXp in a Virtual Machine. That way I can have the best of both worlds.
Need to do some testing to see what performance hit I would take as opposed to running the apps natively in Windows itself.

I could suffer the slowness, but what really does not work in virualization are the peripherals, at least not when I tried. Its great to use your favorite programs, but if you can't use your devices... blech.
