Car Accident

So theoretically:

The drive-thru attendant told me to pull up and they would bring me the food and the person behind got theirs first and started honking. I pull up and then put the car in reverse to pull over to the side so they can get by. Unfortunately at the same time they turn to the right and pull up. They stop but I keep going because I thought I had enough room. This all resulted in a scrape on their front bumper by the corner and my rear bumper.

Police are called by the restaurant staff but they don't arrive by the time we leave. I told the person I detail cars and I can polish it out no problem. We exchange insurance information. It seems like the damage is very minor, I think some clay might take care of it, but then I've never tried using clay on a smudge that bad before when I think about it.

My main question is, if I fix the problem, can they still use that insurance info they have on me to sue me? The person seems a little shady and I was wearing nicer clothes today due to an interview so they might think I had money they could make off of me. The car had scratches on it from Chicago's usual street parking practices already so I wasn't too sure about the fact that they didn't just let it go and insisted on getting my insurance information. They got my Policy number and license plate and first name, but not my last name. And am I in trouble for leaving the scene since the police were called?

Here's a pic to demonstrate in case you didn't understand my wording. The yellow is the curb leading out to the exit, which is why I had to reverse, its one of those single-lane drive-thrus. Blue is my car pulling and then reversing, the orange line is the other persons car.

Re: Car Accident

Hope you took actual pictures of what happened. I always take my camera with me in a case like this beside other uses! Hope everything works out in the end for you.

Re: Car Accident

No pics, my car had no damage. The other car I'm hoping it'll come out with clay and/or polish. It was like a 2 mph accident so its nothing bad. I'm more concerned about the big $$ my insurance would get jacked up if it does get reported. I haven't had any accidents at all since I started driving so I've been lucky to have the accident-free discount.

Re: Car Accident

I don't know about where you live but in CA you don't have to report the accident if the damage is under $500. You should be safe.

Re: Car Accident

Take pictures before you do any work and take pictures of your finished work too. Work with the person and maybe detail the whole car as a bonus if they decide not to go forward with any insurance claims.

so is this really "fictional?"

They actually have a big dent in their rear door from getting hit by an uninsured driver so I'm sure they're thinking more about getting the car fixed rather than jeweling the paint to perfection. Maybe I'll offer the full detail to them if they're cool about everything when I fix the smudge.

I don't know if its true, but I heard of people getting busted for things in real-life with what they said on the internet being used against them, just FYI.
