At least to me, it seems a lot of people who suffer with chronic rock chips either live in areas constantly full of loose stones (areas under constant construction), or follow too darn closely to the vehicle in front of them.
It's always a slightly tense experience when one of those... eh hem... "intellgence challenged" drivers decide to squeeze their way into your lane, no signal, no warning, a few feet from your front bumper. Doesn't help when they're big butt vehicles too, with nice huge tires and no mudguards to protect your precious paint.

There is ALWAYS a cement truck, construction truck, crusted over bulldozer on a trailer, or mudded up 4x4 on the road somewhere with your name on it. Driving on the freeways here in Houston it is damn near impossible to avoid catching rocks. I watched in amazement the other day as a rock about twice the size of a quarter hopped gently up onto my hood somehow, at freeway speeds mind you, walked across the hood, rolled up onto the windshield, and off the other side of the car. How it didn't bounce into my car and just wreak destruction I'll never understand. It was weird to watch, and I just had to laugh at how that was even possible doing 70 mph.

Lousinina (how ever you spell that state....) Prez Bush said...to the Barksdales AFB Commander (so I've been told) that this is BY FAR the worst roads he has ever been on quality wise, and I have agree with THe Prez Bush on that.

Devils:
I can relate to your story. My '94 Maxima got nailed with a rock on I-294 en route to work. I had a small crack but it got worse even after Safelite "fixed" it. I had to shell out $220 in order to replace the windshield because the crack had gotten larger and I did not want to get nailed for driving an unsafe vehicle.

My Mazda has horribly thin paint that chips easily. One of the few but main complaints of Mazda owners.
