Re: Other Car Forums Detailing Guru's

The G35 board that I visit is also frequented by Picus, a.k.a. Patrick, and Diesel1 who are all respected members of this site. They of course provide excellent and trustworthy help. Picus even included step by step instructions for darn near everything.

I do provide information if it hasn't been already and try to lead them down the right path. Most of the time they are very basic questions so I point them to the known how to's and to Autopia.

I do get bothered by the members who say "go buy the whole Zaino line" you won't be disappointed. This is especially true when this information is given to someone who doesn't know the difference between play-doh and automotive clay.

What bothers me even more than that is when the OP doesn't want to take the advice of the seasoned veterans of the board. They'd rather follow the people spewing product names rather than process. Oh well there is not a thing that we can do about that. It's their loss for not having enough sense to see the light

Give a guy an old t-shirt and a $15.00 bottle of Zaino Z2pro and he is out to conquer the world....

Same here. This is the reason I am staying away from Zaino and playing around with some other stuff(FK1, JW).

I think it's funny that when I visit other sites(I won't name names) that every little lost puppy on that site worships a few certain people on that site and they listen to every little product recomendation they give them so that they can make the vendor some money. Every one who thinks they know anything about detailing really doesn't know sh!t until they visit this site. I love Autopia

Re: Other Car Forums Detailing Guru's

I try to behave and not post in every single detailing thread on other forums, but sometimes it's tough. My biggest problem is when someone gives misinformation that can cause harm (I don't care about product recommendations). On one I was on recently, a guy said his car was swirled and asked what to do...and someone (actually a moderator) posted that it would probably have to be wet sanded and the clear resprayed. Ugh. I couldn't let that one go....

That seriously irritates me. Watching people talk about "being in awe of" someone or saying ridiculous things like "you are the greatest gift to detailing" etc are just nonsense.

At one particular site I visit from time to time, they have their know-it-all who responds to nearly every thread multiple times. This person is the first to respond to questions, usually well before the mods do. This member simply rehashes what they have read other "experts" type. People seem so thankful to this person.

This "expert" tells us all what speed to run on our rotary, tells us what products to use in certain situations, and even knows about paint refinishing.

This person has never used ANY machine to polish paint. I'll say no more.

There is a reason Autopia cleaned house a couple years ago...

The only other site I regularly visit, Off Topic, I've moderated the detailing forum there for 5 years now.

One reason I have never tried Zaino was due to the fact I got so tired of hearing the overzealous people brag about it. To this day, I havent tried it but........... times may be changing.....I just may have to see what its all about If people would truely be honest, and polite, we'd all be better off, but there's snowballs chance in Haiti of that happening....

..and also just so true! Although I have used Zaino in the past, the almost religous fervor that gets built up around it can be off-putting. For beginners that start out with it based off a recommendation, then plug it as though it's the holy grail without having previously tried any other quality car care products...all you can do is scratch your head.

I'm also reminded of the guy on the BMW board that was going to town on his new M5 with a rotary and recommending this to anyone and everyone regardless of their experience level. Members there just ate it up and his big defense was that "technology has changed, folks!"...um, yeah whatever.
