windshild leak...

My windshild was replaced before I got my MCS and never noticed the small leak it had on the drivers side will it rained really good one day... got in my car hit the wipers and the water was still there... it was on the inside... anywho the previous owner of the car has every piece of paperwork that was EVER done on the car incluing the windshild, so I called and they came and resealed it for free...

heres my qustion,

I gave my car a qucik rinse so they could see where the leak was and take it from there, without drying it or anything got some sealant out did a line on the outside and inside and said that should fix it....umm water+metal+trapped=corosion? that is my worry DO you think any damage may come from this if there is in fact traped water bettween the new seal and old one?

Re: windshild leak...

Are you saying they laid a new strip of the Windshield seal on top of metal or on top of the old sealant? I've used the black tar like stuff before an it needs to be applied to dry metal to seat properly.

If your going to metal that is. I don't see what harm a little bit of water between two layers of the seal would do.

Re: windshild leak...

No he just put it on top of the old sealant, but what I was thinking if the water found a way between the sealant and the metal...and now there is new sealant over it, thats what im afraid of.

Re: windshild leak...

The metal where the windshield is (where the glass seats) leaves the factory primed and painted just like the rest of the car and as such has just as much rust protection.

If the metal was exposed prior to them putting the new seal on then I might worry but that stuff is pretty water repellent. So some water between the two layers should be a big concern.

However I would be concerned on how water was leaking in to inside of the car in the first place, which leads me to believe that you do have a small hole somewhere up top or along the roof rails already.

Re: windshild leak...

Yeah, echoing what MorBid posted, the only way I'd worry is if you have reason to believe the water is contacting bare metal (maybe from when they removed the old windshield, did they scratch through the paint?).

Other than the scratched-to-metal issue I would'nt worry about it at all. I went through this when I replaced the front and back glass on the old Volvo wagon we used to have...the new glass leaked something awful and there was a lot of water from testing/resealing/retesting/etc. etc., took 'em a long time to seal it all up right. No problems when I had the car and the in-law we gave it to isn't having any problems either.
