New detailing bay! (In progress)

Up until now I've been doing all my detailing at my place. I don't do a ton of detailing. Between full time work and college courses at night, I really only have Saturdays to do any detailing. Newho, the garage I used up until now wasn't heated, but had a decent amount of room. I had to keep all my gear in bins, but it worked. The lighting wasn't that good either.


Newho, I've now got access to a nicely sized vehicle bay! The graphic's company I work for is expanding, and we're adding a vehicle bay in for not only my detailing, but for vehicle installs as well. Im really excited! It'll give me a warm (or airconditioned in the summer) place to detail, and keep all my gear as well. I'll be adding shelves and stocking all my tools/products on there.

I thought I'd post some pics of the progress we're making! The finished bay door will be a 10ft x 12ft door, and the bay itself is 35ft x 24 ft.

A friend and I are doing all the framing and installing the bay door. There's a bunch of other reno's in the other parts of the building but since it's unrelated I'll leave all that out of it.

We've finished pouring the slab where the bay door will go (you'll see a large wall there right now). That'll be knocked down to fit the bay door.

Here's a few snapshops of progress so far. It doesn't look like much right now, but by the time we're done it will look much nicer (no ugly green and blue paint) and the interior will be nicely finished.

Does this place have many employees? I only see one problem with this, theft of your products. Unless the bay area will be locked so no one can get in.

That's spec for a firewall...All the rest of the walls are normal stud spacing.

heheh yah the exterior is ugly as sin right now...But as I mentioned it'll all be painted etc.

mcnab- I'm looking forward to watching your progress, looks like you have a good start.

What are you doing for floor drains? Any environmental issues (e.g., I put in an oil separator for my drains even though it's just a residential garage/"shop").

It's sort of a family run business. So there aren't a huge number of employees there. The ones that are there are family or friends, so I can trust that they won't steal my stuff

I honestly hadn't given that any thought. The floor is already a finished concrete floor, putting something in might be pretty hard at this stage of the game. We're also running both hot and cold water taps outside, as I plan on doing most of my washing out there, then bringing it inside to dry. If it's very cold out, I can do the ONR wash inside without getting the floor too slick.

Well I've got a few more pics to share. We've completed 2 things. First, we've knocked out the area where the bay door will be, and we've finished framing that in. It's pretty much dark by 4:30 here now, and we didnt' finish framing up that bay area until 6pm the other night. I don't much like framing in the dark. We've boarded up the cavity right now because the massive glass/aluminum bay door won't be here until next week.

We've also finished up some of the drywalling. You can get an idea of how the room is starting to come together. There is a TON of lighting up there. There's about 7 huge sets of tube lights in the bay, which will make it AWESOME for lighting. Here are some pics.

Again, I know the exterior looks hideous right now, but in a few weeks time it will look very sharp with the bay installed, and the exterior painted.





The ramp to the bay was designed so lowered cars can get up there. We used my car as a test. If my car can get up there, than any other car can

Glad the ramp will work for low cars, good thinking checking it.

I've forgotten to update this for awhile. The door has since been put in, and we've started painting the interior. The exterior also has a coat of primer on here in these pics, so you can see it doesn't look quite as ugly as it used to.

I've also had the plumber hook in HOT and COLD water bibs. So I can now hookup the foamgun to hot water, as well as the rinse water. Also the heatpump is now in as well along with 2 ceramic heaters. I can get this thing as toasty or cold as I need

Here are some pics of the framing of the bay door (after we knocked out the concrete wall) as well as the new bay door in place. The pics don't really do it justice on just how big the bay is. The truck you see in there is a F350 Extended Crew Cab. It's massive and even with that truck in there, I have 8 feet on either side of the truck when it's parked in there and about 12 feet in the front and another 5 closer to the door. TONS of room to work around the vehicle.

The lighting isn't' quite finished in there either. As I mentioned in my previous post, there's 7 sets of halogens lights going in, which will provide MORE than ample lighting.. I'll still use the xenon's for polishing though.

I'll start moving my stuff in there shortly along with all my tools etc and detailing supplies, so I'll update this again when it's totally finished

Heh heh, it *is* bigger than it might first appear; that F-350 provides a good sense of scale.
